in my opinion India writers have talent. among them i like chatan bhaght.his fiction novel made me to take decision that i want become like chetan bhagat.its feel while reading.
i agree with the panelists of this discussion but at the same time would like to add that a good book sells itself. marketing comes at a cost which, i am sure the young authors cnat afford. the new breed of MBA authors have made a plan for the same...but?? i read life..love..kumbh, the other day and was bolwed over by the maturity of the idea. true indian writing has come of age..kudos
Unfortunately English Books by Indian Authors don't take off well. It has a limited audience and we have to live with it. Of course the quality of writing of most authors (all ) are not to any standard be it theme, writing pattern, language quality, etc. Most books keep floating around cosmopolitan markets. The authors names are not even popular among cosmopolitan educated mass. where is the question of selling 5000 copies and all.
Indian book reading population mostly read fictions from their local languages whihc are popular and don't have intention of reading English books by Indian authors. They don't even consider it. However the same indian educated book reading mass read most international authors. Go to colleges; see the readers; Check the working youngster group, you will find that they will all be reading popular best selling fictions. No one carries any indian author books. At home they would read fictions and books in their mother tongue mostly
Most of the Indian Authors in the last two decades have produced very immature writing and content that lacks any imagination. Infact, authors like Chetan Bhagat are one trick ponies trying to cash in by appearing in NDTV talk shows and being in news. Even to this date selling 5000 books by an Indian Author is almost an impossible task for any publisher.

I work as a literary agent for a leading Publishing House in Delhi. Trust me, Coffee Table books , Cook Books, Tourism Books can be sold in about 3000 quantity. Fiction is very difficult to break 5000 mark and that too I am talking about a best-seller.

Are all those claims by various Indian publishers (and by extension, the respective authors) about often hitting pay dirt hollow ?
If there aren't any Indian authors who has sold more than 5000 copies in recent times, then how is it that names such as Bhagat, Adiga and a host of others are bandied about so often by various sections of the media ??
Do they all have a vested interest in making things out that way that compels them to collude in this manner ?
And, if none of the authors sell big, then do the Indian publishing houses derive all their revenues from selling foreign authors/non-fiction alone ?

GRB, dear please try LIfe..love..kumbh by aporva kala. I read it and was wonderstruck by the use of language, style of writing, boldness of the idea and the beauty of prose..am sure indian writing in english has come of age now..
I'll never read an Indian Author. They always write with a hidden agenda. They use other communities especially minorities to make a point for the whole of India. I don't trust their writings.
