Engg to MBA
by varun bhatnagar on Apr 16, 2012 02:03 PM  | Hide replies

I think corporates tend to employ the technical background people more than a bcom/mba coz of the analytical skills in which a techie excels. Sharo minds are always in demand , whatever be the profession.

Indian middle class
by abc_xyz abc_xyz on Apr 16, 2012 01:02 PM  | Hide replies

If you are born into a education-emphasized middle class family, then you end studying a good 3 decades, without any aim. At class 10, you choose Biology as per your interests, so as to keep your options open for both medical and engg. Then, after having struggled for two years stying Maths, Physics, Chemistry and Biology and after having excelled in all 4, one waits for the Engg Rank and Medical Rank. As medical seats and few and far between and the ladder to the top is a long and arduous one, the majoirty choose Engg over medical ( those 2 yrs of hard work on biology goes waste). At engg, he is so obsessed with either a Tech job after graduation or an IT job or try GATE (fully technical) or try GMAT/GRE ( English based) or CAT (aptitute/maths/GD). There he gets to choose an Management (therby 4 yrs of tech knowledge goes waste) and ends up doing a MBA from a second-tier school in general management. Finally gets into the IT industry on the business side (does he have any business knowledge ???) as a fresher, gets promoted to a Project manager in 5 yrs and starts playing politics to save his job. A medicine interested teenager turned engg turned MBA graduate turned IT Project Manager !!! Life goes on and on without any meaning to it.

Wow!!! Fantastic analysis.. Now the same analysis I wud present for a person who takes Commerce instead of Science...Finishes 10th - Gets into Commerce - Completes B-Com - Doesnt know one-bit what to do further as he has NO Technical knowlege- 90% of Commerce folks end up doing some meaningless jobs/profiles. Some fotunate few who have their Dad's Financial backing take up MBA in Mktg/HR/etc from some B or C grade college as 99 per-cent of B-Com folks can't compete with Engieers' IQ in CAT & only end up getting into B/C grade MBA colleges - Gets into FMCG thru Campus into Mktg/HR/Or ends up getting into Sales front in Financial sector. U see.. Its a blind man's life for them with hardly any vision. Wherever the road of luck takes them they wud land up there. :-)

A need to review selection procedure by IIMs?
by mukundarajan sundarrajan on Apr 16, 2012 12:51 PM

May be present procedure of group discussions and interviews may not really show the candidates capabilities. In present management scenario there are lot of management disciplines emerging which require high quantitaive skilss than written or oral english.I feel Doon's school & Stephen's education need not be the hall marks of success in getting IIM seat and later in career. Let us get rid of macaulay's education pattern and develop something appropriate to present industry requirements of modern India.I am speaking this as one of a MBA from premier business school with three decades of corporate work experience.

Either a FOOL or ILLITERATE
by M on Apr 16, 2012 12:29 PM  | Hide replies

Entire USA is in tatters due to their sub-standard business economics;
GM like company has become Government-Motors and their begging scenario is worse than AIR-INDIA.
Whoever tries to learn their education in money-management and economic discipline is a FOOL and if someone is paying to learn that is a SCOUNDREL but illiterate only.

Many engineers see easy money in financial institutes, but soon they may see frustration, when they are asked to fullfill financial targets, which are difficult to achieve.

I have given guidance to many engineers and now they are happy in their respective discipline working.

If 9.7 GPA/CPA means academic excellence in Engg/Technology
by Ujwala Kulkarni on Apr 16, 2012 10:32 AM  | Hide replies

Why join management? Why not do something related to technological development? Is money and getting a cushy job everything in life? Today? May be yes. It wasn't that way in the eighties though.

In India, stiff competition leads people to first find security.. an IIT stamp provides that security in life. Some people are hard working even if they dont enjoy what they are doing... and end up doing well in IIT. Anyways, this person is extremely confused.. he has tried iim, went to do a masters in the US and came back to take IAS. And then did a second masters from Harvard. He should be an academic.. he loves taking exams and trying to prove himself that he is sharp... suggests a strong insecurity.
