Never ever compare yourself with others. Some may be doing better than you in career, some in life, some in both and many may not. Again this is temporary. A few years from now, things can change drastically and you might feel better or worse. Hence the only way to succeed in life is this: Every year on 1st of Jan, analyse whether you are doing better right now than you were last year on the same day. If no, see where you made mistakes, try to improve on that and set goals for the year. If you really have been doing good and are satisfied (chances are that you likely are not), see what steps you need to take, to maintain that. Repeat the process every year.
DONT WASTE MONEY/TIME/CAREER/LIFE by comparing yourself with others. That is the first step towards becoming a better person that you are.
I'm perhaps the laziest guy. When I had a good GATE score few years back, I just didn't apply for top colleges(found difficult to compare so many top institutes, found difficult to ask money for application fees from my father who always had a smile-less face)easily settled for a nearby college in my own city for the time being, came to know the mediocre faculty after joining, lost motivation under the incompetitive environment and somehow had a PG degree against my name, but looking back those few years were wasteful. I extremely regret it, it pulls me down again & again. LESSON: If you really want to be competitive don't settle for mediocrity at any point of time.

It is never too late to change. Change yourself and change around you. If you are surrounded by mediocrity, that only means you have a lot of scope for improvement. See it as an Opportunity rather than a Threat. Good luck.

I can only say this : Take the resposibility for your life. Forget the past- It is gone. Think about the present. We have to live in present .
Must say, rediff has come up with some meaningful tips on managing the time and your mood. remeber that we all are human beings and we have our own emotions and feelings. You cannot be happy everytime, so during your down time or ill-time, you can use these tips.
All these things listed. Everyone wants to. Meaning simple things like hitting the gym, going for a walk, or plain playing with kids.
But many jobs are so full. I myself catch the 7:30 train, travel 2 hours to reach office. In the evening, I catch the 9:25 pm train, travel 2 hours home. I work sundays from home. Yes, my main issue is I have no career, which I can capitalize. That is my drawback.
What I want to do is wake up at 8 am. Hit the gym, reach an office (which is hopefully close to home), work 9 hours, head back home, play with my kid, read and sleep. But it does not seem to be possible in this lifetime. My pursuit for earning for the family takes up all my time. By the time I have time in my 60s, my kid would have grown up and will have no time for me. I dont know where I went wrong.

Think the option of staying near to office with you family. …May be around 5km circle. This will save 4 hrs of your time

And in all probability your bosses would be talking about the importance of work-life balance and you are not allowed to work at office, instead your time is taken by only by eatings, meetings, celebrations, trainings, and emails.

You know , this is a typical routine or case with an average Indian ir-respective of position. We all are same , I am 45 , a CEO with a Billion dollar company , managing a handsome salary , an Engineer MBA from top notch college , having paid 3 lacs life time membership for a club( which I have visited on 40-50 times in last 6 years). I can also write many such articles but only for others. People say I am organised and are jeolous but we all are rowing in the same stream , it is the compensation which differs. By the time we are 60 something our Children will have their own way and thinking. Jai Hind

Diagree!!! I too work for an Indian IT MNC and I am able to get enough time for my family, got gym(3-4 times a week, as i do splits)despite travelling daily for about 3 hrs.
You can get time for family and your body. Just calculate how many hours in last week you Lost by just watching a TV and browsing Net.

Abhijit/Rythm, The solution is within yourself. The first step to solving the problem is accepting that there is one. You are already past the biggest hurdle. Fix an amount of time that you will spend on yourself/family no matter what. And stick to it. no matter what. Good luck.

Bro...you are wasting 4 hours in a day traveling to and fro from office. That's criminal wastage of time. Try to stay nearer to the office - even at the sacrifice of monthly savings and home space. Think of changing city or changing work place - nearer to house. If you work for 30 years and 250 work days a year on an average, then with 4 hours travel time you are loosing 30000 hours. That translates into 1250 full 24 hours days and around 3.5 years. Forget about the cost that your bearing towards your health. I was in Mumbai for a year - one hour travel time each to and fro from office. I seeked a transfer to another metro within 6 months where I could afford a place to restrict travel time to work to 15 mins. Am doing much much better.
