Reality is that IITs are placement factories. Thats what IITians are always proud about. I know few guys from IITs who has done Mechanical Engineering or even Civil Engineering but working as Software Engineer.I always wonder and even questioned one of my colleague..don't they have any passion to their subject at all ? How come one can spend hours and hours of preparation(that itself a wrong model of selection, it has become more of perfection by practice rather than pure intellectual ability ) for JEE and then choose Mech / Civil , spend 4 years in few of finest engineering schools in India and then once you complete, you join in IT company ..So that clearly shows that there is no passion, its quick money which makes people to choose this path. Research is not domain where you make quick money. And at the sametime , if they are really creative with new ideas, they should be like founders of google , facebook ... Majority of those graduates neither have passion for their subject nor have any disruptive business ideas. They are like any other college grads but with better skills due to better facilities / faculties .

The fact is that the cream of eveyyear's intermediate students in maths and science go to the IITs.
But the sad fact is that cream of gradiate level students of IITs and IISc.do not prefer either post grad./ doctorate studies or the teaching profession. They prefer IIMs and would like to start a career in business environment and earn sufficiently to lead a decent life.
We pay piittance to teachers in general. that is reflected in the quality of teachers in in every educational institutions.
IIT/IIM doesn't matter. Focus on How much tax you're paying to India? How many jobs you've created in India? How manly dollars you're remitting to India?
Indian Instituitions will never attain the status of Stanford,Wharton,Kellog as there is not much siginificant work is carried out.
Imagine if guy in IITs/IIMs was offerred a 1 mn dollar job irrespective of his interest, he will quicky accept the offer without second thoughts.Where as In Harvard a guy was offered one million dollar job even much before he finished his school, he straightway refused the offer and later on went on to create history by becoming the youngest billionare. It is the work that stimulates their mind where as in India only money cann stimulate the work.

Al Capone,
Can't agree more with you, we go to IITs for the lure of high starting money not for passion of technology, if that would have been the case, we would have been most innovative nation on earth, which everyone knows we are not even near to.
