There are ultra zoom cameras available. They are very good for beginners who are getting interested in photography and offer excellent zooming. Canon SX30IS, Nikon P series, Sony etc everyone has presence in this category. Long range shooting with SLRs is very expensive. You will need to buy separate, specific SLR-only lenses which are very expensive

Pentax is not present officially in India. You would have to source the camera from either Singapore, Hong Kong or US. You can also try second hand market, but I'm not sure what are the prices.
I have always known Pentax as one of the pioneers in DSLR photography and this article has thrown more light on why they are among the best. Thanks to Gandhi, I am now reconsidering my decision to go for a Canon/Nikon.
Even I hav an old non-digital SLR (the role one) camera - ZX10. I hav found the photographs to be far more better than any new digital cameras or other old comparative cameras in the range. I though liked very much the photos posted here (those marked with copyright of yours).

Digital has a long way to go to catch up with roll film. If you can still buy roll film for your camera use it for more specialized work and use your digital as on the fly snapshot camera. Mark my words film is still much superior then digital.

Digital HAS caught up and at times surpassed roll film in 35mm DSLR format. Obviously, if you need 4X5 or 8X10, film is superior. Unless you shoot B&W, the dynamic range of modern digital sensors is close enough to film. B&W has a much higher range.
Digital images have virtually no grain except at very high ISOs (higher than 6400). Film has grain. Even at ISO 100. Speaking of ISO, digital SLRs shoot with low noise at ISO 6400. Finding film that is more sensitive than ISO 3200 is impossible. Canon and Nikon top end digital cameras shoot at ISO 102,400, and this can be expected only to go up. If you are a sports/wildlife photographer or shoot low light hand-held, you would be a fool to shoot with anything other than digital. Dynamic range for portraits isn't that important because it can be controlled. What is left is landscapes, and yes, film probably beats it a little bit in dynamic range (but non-linear response curve) and resolution if you use 4X5 or 8X10. The dynamic range of paper is much less than both digital and film, so if you expose your photo properly, in most practical settings, dynamic range is not a big deal. Most pro landscape photogs have switched to digital for 35mm shots.
You can't develop your own color film and so you can't do the tricks that B&W people did for years (like dodging and burning). Photoshop allows you to improve on things like response curves or sharpness. Why would anyone want to lose that advantage

In reply to your question, please go through an article I wrote almost two years ago which talks about exactly this thing - I've clearly put down the advantages and drawbacks of both film and digital. http://www.brighthub.com/multimedia/photography/articles/40689.aspx Hope it answers your question
