JD- Jack of all and master of none
by Swapnil Bhalerao on Feb 05, 2015 12:31 PM

Certainly asking a written JD is surely near impossible in India, where unemployment is increasing manifold and with liberal policy by Govt. and favoring to MNCs, they have upper hand asking any employee to leave at a short notice. Once you start doing jobs (whatever it may be - out of your JD), it becomes your obligation than what you were thinking of helping others. Though your CVs shows many responsibilities from say as a assistant to a decision maker like that of MD. In such case, even companies at the time of interviews, doubt about your exact profile if you ever go for a job change.

Do this simple check wherever you work
by iota on Feb 05, 2015 12:05 PM

Most employees who have been with the organization for many many years - they will be usually dumb, incompetent, political, with long tails.

Most employees who have short stints with companies - are usually bright, and good at work.

Lesson: Tail wagging is rated higher than competence.

But, don't lose your dignity.
Life is greater than A Office cubicle.

The crux of the matter is that...
by iota on Feb 05, 2015 12:01 PM

In most 3rd rate organizations (many IT Cos) - you can be easily fired if your boss recommends your firing. Simple.

In such a situation - are you in a position to argue with your boss or anyone powerful?

If you do argue then - Your boss will cleverly put the following line in your appraisal: "Incompetent, Uncooperative, Takes too much time to finish job - recommended action: release from services"

Employee goes to HR: "This is not true".
HR smiles and looks the other way.
Employee will be forced to leave.

This is not exaggeration but real scenario in many IT cos.

Adherance to Job Discription
by nagarajan r on Jul 06, 2011 02:34 PM

My experience in the cadre of a state civil servant has shown that government servants are
expected to do works not included in JD.Some
times this is in the interest of common public
and some times in the interest of political or official bosses. If one misses out in any of these he has to face the wrath of who ever is
concerned. While there is no excuse for failure in respect of the public the situation in respect of the second will be miserable for the
servant. This is because the shadow of the Raj still lingers over the conceptions of both politicians and bureaucrats.Sometimes this is worst in the case of politicians irrespective
the party. The civil servant either he himself or through a subordinate has to do many things
which is not there in the jd burying his conscience in the graveyard of his native village. This may involve spending money of questionable origin. Does this not pave way for corruption in the administration. Why is this not realized by persons responsible? In the case of software industry the culture is different. A person is made to bear over burden
in the name of completion of a work punctually and correctly to the satisfaction of the client
Work of inefficient subordinates is dumped on
the the next in hierarchy in the name of responsibility.Similar is the case of a person who volunteers to help others. He is stamped as a person competent to solve inaccuracies and
made to work which he is not bound to.Other
peoples incompetence are made work.

Food for Thought - Neha
by Neha Srivastava on Jun 14, 2011 04:57 PM

The discussion table would get too hot to debate over some topic like this. Whether employees should have a job description or not …..Playing devil’s advocate lets understand this…..
We cannot afford to speak the local language and say it’s not for Indians…with the global concepts of trades/ businesses flowing across nations, we are bound to think what’s required globally to become competitive around the world. Building on the same we also cannot afford to copy what may be followed in XYZ country. AND at the same time dare to overlook the kind of business that an organization is in….CAN WE????
So here I understand everything is a conglomerate TO BE OR NOT TO BE, which defines the ideology of our fraternity – HUMAN RESOURCES. What is required as per my understanding is how to come out with best systems and processes which could help business flourish vis-is my employee’s growth. It will be foolish for us to completely negate the concept of Job Description and equally foolish to adhere to it completely. Let the HR troop develop that maturity to take decisions with a standard deviation to make & break processes as and when required, for a mutual growth of course……And there lays the biggest CHALLENGE….. FACE IT !!!

Difficult topic
by Yakoub Khan on Jun 12, 2011 10:24 PM

I applaud Mr. Brillian S.K. but, in the context of India, this becomes a difficult issue.
For Ex: If a boss were to ask his subordinate to get hotel bookings done, he/she would follow the order, regardless of the job description. Later, when one the subordinate becomes a boss, he may demand the same from his/her subordinates. It continues.
In smaller companies, the problem increases.
There are also critical situational factors, for example, before their appraisal, employees may tend to do anything for their boss.
As you see, there are a lot of grey areas in this discussion, and I wonder if India Inc or other developing countries are prepared for it. How does one say "no" to one's supervisor? Isn't it like playing with fire irrespective of how diplomatic or articulate the "no" may be. Finally, with due respect, I feel that issues like child labour deserve a higher priority than matters like the topic in discussion.

Real Face of Public and Private Sectors
by stalin199@rediffmail.com on Jun 11, 2011 04:53 PM

Now-a-days talent is neither recognized in public sectors nor in private sectors.
With my experience,in software companies, these software companies, does not need sincere and hardworking people. They give more importance to personal issues, than the actual work.
in some companies, managers are treated as gods, they think, they are running the companies, fools! they don't realize that it the lower level people who are actually running
the company.and unfortunately it is the lower level people who are laid off first,at bad market times.when there are no lower level people, where is the question of
employer?.
At the time of bad market conditions, they lay off people, citing performance and attitude as reasons.which is totally unfair, while the most influenced one ,inspite of bad performance will manage to be in the job very cleverly
On the other hand, coming to government companies in india, government wants only SC/ST/BC/OBC candidates, they don't need sincere and hardworking merit candidates be it in either, education or emplyment sectors.afterall it is the game of vote bank politics
So Totally i can say that Government jobs are only meant for SC/ST/BC/OBC candidates, not for merit people
Private Jobs are only meant for Recommended people, not for merit people(except very few companies, which look for merit.)
The question remains, where should the merit people go?
