haha.. how many people even watch doordarshan anymore... with the thousand other crap channel choices you get... I think it is the opposite... depression rates have gone up because of injection of western influence and lifestyle.
My parents and their grandparents were never bored... or depressed... they always had something to do... what to do we modern indians do - we relate our happiness to what is shown in the idiot box.. not to see the world around us!!! so it is but natural that we will be depressed! I am even surprised they conducted a poll...

Thats very true. Its all the western influence, that modifies luxury into necessity and then people are all worried just to get the latest commodities. When we were young and our parents couldnt earn so well that they could afford everything.Still, earning less money was never a problem. Nowadays, there is so much of hype that if you dont have the idiot Iphone , Good car , and AC in every room and other such stuff, you are considered as a loser which is how fake.People are living false lifes and are getting depressed

I couldnt agree more with you shashank... we have forgetten the art to live within one's means. This does not mean you aspire for things and success.. of course you do but one's aspirations should be more ideal - less materialistic... as when you will taste success (the material.. things will automatically follow)

India is overpopulated, over-corrupted, disorganized, inefficient, dangerous, unhealthy, dirty, rabid, repugnant, disgusting, nefarious, odious, abhorent, negative, racist, bigoted, fascist, brainwashed, hostile, a terrorist state, a cancerous tumor to Asia and is secretly ruled by Great Britain. India's population should only be 320-million, without poverty and all negative and depressing facts that contaminate India.

yes india used to be happy, with khajuraho style dressng, and then the western influence came in and the depression went up.
I believe the problem is not just with the politicians or corruption.... its with the system..... our system is built in such a way that the common man has the least importance, even if we are the biggest democracy.... in developed countries like US, the common man is given the most importance and their system is fine tuned in favor of general public...
this kind of system is what we indians miss in india ... and the result is anger, frustration and probably ends up in depression.. tell me how many of you are not frustrated at least once after you come out of your home morning????
Even if this study is just based on a sample, I strongly believe that there could be more number of Indians who are depressed. Its not just about politicians or corruptions, but the entire system that Indians live upon is not optimized for general public. Nothing is made in favor of public. We have to demand, request, plead or whatever you name it, to get something from the government. On contrast, in developed countries like US, we can see that the prime importance is given to public. That\'s what we miss here. Even if we say we are biggest democracy, in actual, the public is treated as crap.
Write now i live in toronto and you won't believe that when I was in India, I went through this for almost 10 years, and i am still struggling. I have no friends even today here. Our people here are also not changed, they are the most arrogant, unhelping people in all the communities who live here. Same was the case when i was in India. And when i read this article i am not at all surprised. I have went through one failed marriage already becuase of this, and my health is don't ask how it is, it is pathetic even today. When i go for work, and if i find any indian here, he is the first person to put me under stress, and not chinese, or african, or caribeean or even white people. And that hurts you more, when you own people ignores you.

People like you who went thru failed marriage constitute less than 3% of India. But that number is 53% in USA and Canada. So, you are not representative of what generally happens in India.

Sir, please fing the statitics in google and you will find that divorces are increasing at alarming rate in india, too. Most of the married couple in india, they do not sleep with this wives for more than 3 months. They do not get along well at well,(they fight almost every hour, seven days a week) just to keep their image pure in the society(which we indians are too much worried about) they do not go for separation. And read my notes again, it is not about failed marraiages, it is about your attitude. We indians have the worst attitudes.

very true.. in many cases its only a facade to show a successful marriage to society because of either the stigma or the lengthy legal process to get divorce in india which favors wife and husband has to shell out a lot..

Pratik, if you truly want to help yourself. Tell yourself "People love me and I am happy" in the morning, afternoon and night.
Don't blame the country and the entire people. Generalizing of any kind is inacurate.
