Irrespective of the criticism and cynical attitude, Valentine's day will always be a day dedicated to Love, so lets forget the complication and celebrate love in whatever way one can!

I don't, not with parties and drinking with mates. Those celebrate with parties etc are just fooling themselves and wish to forget for one day that they are now a year older and a step nearer the grave. I go to temple to thank god for giving me life and sustaining it for it to date so I can enjoy being on earth. And my parents go and to temple and thank god for a child born, to them. If you think parties is the best way to celebrate then you are also fooling yourself. Beside Valentine has nothing to do with love and affection. It is a day of feast for Roman to celebrate the martyrs of Roman Monks in Africa. Beside not all countries celebrate on 14th Feb.

The way most of us are celebrating birthday now a days is not our culture. It's western style and this is also to drive business. I too do not know exactly how we, hindus, celebrate birthday per our culture. Few things I know are we celebrate our birthday as per Hindu Panchang, not exactly on the same day every year as westerners do. It's a 3 day celebration. The birthday boy/girl wakes up early in the morning, offers prayers to the parents/god. They will visit temple. They will try to make God's created living beings by giving alms to the poor, visit orphanages or feed needy animals/plants. One very imp thing is lightening a diya is considered very auspicious and it is taken care that it will not blown away, but what we do now-a-days is blow off the candle. It is such a beautiful tradition that should be practiced. Helping the needy on once birthday is such a lovely gesture.
Similarly since about last 10-15yrs, this valentines day also is driving us crazy; not sure when will these educated bunch of Hindus understand the true spirit of celebrating any good things.
Showering your love for one day. What about the 364 days. Beside what has love got to do with Valentines day. Sweet nothing. It has nothing to do with love or loving some one. And in different countries it is celebrated on different days. It is just commercialized to make money out of fools. St valentine was a monk and nothing more. Feb 14 is the day of feast to mark the martyrdom of saints and not to celebrate love as it has become.

Sorry karthik I don't celebrate my birthday, and never have done. I have different philosophy. When one celebrate his/her own birthday it is to forget for a day that they are one year older then last another step nearer to grave. When parents celebrate birth day of their child it is to thank the lord for a child born and seek lords blessings. Parties are not for birthdays that is western phenomena. We indians go to Temples and Mandirs etc for thanks giving.
