We make multimedia interfaces. using our interface you can enable GPS navigation, Digital TV, DVD reverse camera, reverse guideline parking etc on the cars original screen without the need to replace it or any damage being done to it. please send me an email at ahmad@fosp.cn so i can send you a detailed catelog and some more information. Thank you! Regards, Ahmad
in the US GPS shows on the map where one has to take turn well before you reach the junction. And also you have audio instructions.Does GPS work like that in India?Only those familiar with this subject may answer me
Tom Tom is great for its live services where as Garmin is great for its navigation / lane guidance systems. However, whats the point in reviewing European GPS devices in India. India is one of the country where the whole country has a digital map to a scale of 1:25. The mapping was commissioned in 1887 by the then Surveyor General of India. The issue with mapping India is 2 fold.
1) We dont have a change model to include new developments of colonies. Basically the change / update is not controlled. Hence the maps supplied by the GoI for commercial value addition is not up-to date. 2) We dont have a effective post code system. A single postcode typically refers to 1 town or suburb. In UK, a postcode refers to roughly 50 buildings hence approx same latitude / longitude position.
Hence the current providers are dependent on third party API's like Google, with approx latitude and longitude positions which is hard coded.
If we need to use GPS effectively in India, we need to push for postal reform to ensure that we bring a new post code format in India, which can effectively engage with the maps the GoI publish.
We have been using these from last 10 years or so, believe me in some moments they are a boon but also a big pain in the back side as they direct you to wrong roads and areas. They are not always accurate. Satellite transmission is not always available. and in some cars which has ultraviolet light blockers in the wind screen and other glases of the car GPS system does not work in them at 95% of the time un less you keep a window down and your GPS navigator near the window. Not practical all the time.

You are correct Sheetal, Most of the time they are a pain, beside now they are going out of favor since GPS navigation is now available on I Pads and Mobile phones which do not depend on the satellites. GPS loose contact with satalites quite often some times for whole journey, rendering GPS system use less. one must also carry a A to Z road maps in the cars all the time. At least A to Z does not depend on any navigation system its paper based maps are they not. Also print a route map from Google map or AA before you set off. It is a better option and you have a back up if Satnavs fails.
