GDs are indeed overrated. ONLY DEMAGOGUES GAIN AS A RESULT OF GDs.It is definitely not a good tool to discern smartness.

I don't know why GD is still being used in interviews. There is almost no practical use of GD and it is not practiced anywhere in the world except India.
