Has the Gluten content in Wheat has substiantively increased now? What tests are available to know that an individual is suffering from Gluten allergy. Some one please enlighten.

Thank God...I have been diagnosed as one of the victims...

Gluten allergy is a problem....lets accept this!!!
Let me share with you my experience... I have always felt discomfort after having rotis...puris...pizzas since my childhood days...followed by stomach ache, acidity, gas etc. I visited many doctors (gastroenterologist) in the past 15 years... (The most renowned in this field) just suggested medicines like Lan15, Pan40 etc...Which I think was a reactive treatment without trying to know why my weight never crossed 35 kg even after having so much of nutritious food. Recently, I visited Dr. Dogra in Indian Spinal Injuries Center, Vasant Kunj, New Delhi... he suggested going for an allergy test...also endoscopy. Both the tests along with biopsy suggested that my stomach is intolerant of gluten based products. Post that I stopped taking any food which contains gluten...and I am happy to share with you that I have gained weight of additional 6 kg.
Should we still believe this concept is sponsored by business lobbyist??

gluten allergy in india
by Kiran on Apr 26, 2011 01:39 PM  | Hide replies

Celiac disease or gluten intolerance, normally affects young children but research at the PGI, Chandigarh and Dayanand Medical College, Ludhiana, has established that many adults in Northern India are also its victims.

There has been an alarming increase in the number of such patients in the last few years.

R. Kochhar, additional professor, department of gastroenterology, PGI, said celiac disease is a genetic disorder, which is being increasingly diagnosed in adult patients in India even though the largest number of victims are in Europe followed by United States.

Earlier, doctors believed that the classical symptoms were diarrhoea, weight loss and malnutrition. Even osteoporosis, severe iron deficiency, mouth ulcers and unexplained rapid weight loss could point to the disease rather than these phenomena being seen in malnourished patients only, according to Ajit Sood of the DMC College. And those suffering from irritable bowel syndrome could be afflicted with the disease. Children having stunted growth and no gastrointestinal symptoms could also be suffering from gluten allergy.

Proteins which are especially rich in proline and glutamine are the main culprits. These are found in wheat, rye, barley and oat.

The patients normally suffer damage to the lining epithelium of the small intestines, resulting in malabsorption of nutrients. Specialists admit that given the broad range of symptoms, it is very difficult to diagnose the disease.

If a patient does not adopt a gluten-free lifestyle, he or she can develop gastrointestinal cancer or lymphoma. Normally, the disease is diagnosed through endoscopy, biopsy and highly-sensitive blood tests which detect antibodies to the wheat proteins.

However, most of the diagnostic laboratories in India do not have the facilities to conduct these expensive tests.

Unfortunately, health care professionals lack awareness about the disease.

It has been well-established that there are no drugs or medicines to cure this disease.

The only solution is to adhere strictly to a 100 per cent gluten-free diet for life. Gluten-free diet should include abstinence from not only wheat but also suji, maida, bread, biscuits, ice-cream, noodles and other processed foods besides rye, barley and oats.

Rice and maize products are the only safe staple diet for such patients.

The gluten is there from long time and the ratio of gluten allergic to other non-allergic people is one in million.

BUT AFTER 5 year the ratio of gluten allergic to other non-allergic people will be one in thousand ( A THOUSAND TIMES INCREASE IN 5 YEARS )

See what happened with Diabetics. They have increased many times more.... and the poor common man keeps on worry of all these unknown things

Dude it is a real problem for some people and though it will not affect Indian Economy but it definitely affects lifestyle of people with the allergy. Wheat do kill these people if they are not aware of the allergy and do not stop eating wheat.

It is for those people who are intolerant to wheat.
by Kiran on Apr 26, 2011 10:56 AM

If you have o problem consuming wheat based products then it should be alright. I know of many people in india (atleast in south) who complain of discomfort upon eating wheat based products. People talk of burning palms and soles, thirsty feeling and uneasiness and belching.
