Most foreign carriers do compensate if there is a delay or lost baggage. However, it depends on situation. If the delay is due to bad weather which is beyond the control of the airline, you do not get a compensation. But some airlines do put up people in hotels if the delay is inordinate. If the aircraft has a mechanical problem and delayed or cancelled, usually they offer different or alternative flights of other carriers. One thing we need to understand is that NO airline wants to delay or cancel their flights deliberately because the aircraft has to be in the air to make money. So making a special rules( I understand there are provisions in IATA regulations for compensation) will create more unpleasentness and unnecessary litigation. I have seen at airports people bragging about their million dollar business meeting is gone kapoot! Mostly bull s hit !

People travelling by flight pay a huge premium. Hence the compensation. In railways the problem is manifold. Not only there are delays due to technical there are attitudinal delays also like chain pulling etc. Besides the infrasture cannot support the amount of people travelling. Also for improving quality od stations and bad food yoy need is money. You may argue that railways is making money but so many othe government departments are making losses elsewhere and there is a need to support them through excess revenue earned by railways.

not a good logic in your last sentence, Mr.KG. Not even the Railway stations in the 4 metros ( Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai & Kolkatta) are in par with international standard and quality of these stations are worst, not to mention about other railway stations all over the country. Any profit from Railways should ONLY need to be used for the development of Railways. If other government departments are making losses, then, GOI should look into those areas, find out the reasons, remove the constraints, reduce the execessive manpower and find ways to make it profitable. If I say in straight, why does a Government office need a Peon? why? can't these government officers carry the file to move one table to other table? 'Peon' culture was created by British colonial rule and we are still blindly following it. There should NOT be any recruitments of PEONs. PEON is the starting point of corruption in our country. cut that first.

Railways cannot offer compensation because they're already running in losses.All because of vote bank politics-fares haven't increased for past 8yrs. while expenses have increased manfold.Moreover Railways needs huge amount of money for its infrastructure projects and modernisation plans.
