RE: all this noise about IIT
by Bharat Pathiavadi on Sep 25, 2010 10:58 PM

I've read messages on this topic and some others related to IITs with interest. I find it interesting that people are arguing based on 'assumptions', which they consider to be correct, with no data backing whatsoever.

Firstly, we think IIT is 'great'. People are totally convinced. If that be the case, why are such large numbers going to the US for further MS / PHDs? Just to get into the US?

Secondly, if they were that good, I believe top foreign companies should be hiring them directly. Again, I havent seen any data to support this or the opposite.

Thirdly, people think we should create and protect 'islands of excellence'. Im not sure why we should protect an island which maybe helps 10000 people a year. Why cant we provide the same top level education to everyone? i.e.: all engineering education at IIT levels.

I think a lot of people are assuming that excellence can only be provided in small quantities to people who can answer a few hundred questions within a few hours. People who join IIT are good at writing the JEE. That doesn't make them great people, leaders, entrepreneurs or anything else...

The rankings we read about probably correctly reflect the fact that IITs arent up to the mark when compared to not only western universities but also some asian ones in other countries.

Im not sure why any university should be prevented from teaching courses in any area. What India needs is about 30-60 universities which give education in all areas to large numbers o

Bad Bad Move...

Its our failure that we could not create world class colleges and university in spite of having huge talented people. Now we are trying to use the name and reputation of few good standing institutions to create false list of high class institutes.

IITs did not get their reputation because of their name, but because the way they do things, the talent they nurture and the opportunity they provide. Watering down these things will only create masses, but will totally lack classes.

If government want to create world class medical colleges, first they need to change the way medical colleges get their recognitions. Second they need to invest heavily in these colleges, so that the end products can have all required training and knowledge. Third they need to keep these colleges out of bound from quota system and admissions should be purely based on talent, not your caste, religion or economic status.

Creating world class institutions is not a big problem, and problem is not finding enough money or talented faculty or students, but the problem is finding the right kind of administrators and continues execution of responsibility with honesty and integrity.

An IT Technology institution trying to add medical curriculum- it's attroceous. Two different branches together will create utter confusion. No one will be gainer by this move, except that it would create a achaotic situation.

Just because IIT brand name sells , you cannot make them instruct even mochigiri ( cobblers) .

IITs to offer medical courses: bad move!

It will reduce the value the brand name "IIT".

They can collaborate in technology and basic science aspect of medicine and surgery with leading teaching hospitals. and bring in and depute, exchange of teachers.

even their management science degrees are less favoured than other premium management institutes.

Neither good nor bad!

It is terrible!!

It is like a butcher trying to operate a serious abdominal complication or a sweeper trying to plan a skyscraper, both without any qualifications!

This is one move of Sibal I do not agree with. Otherwise he has been doing fairly well, much better than many other ministers. he should leave the medical business to the medical people or other businessmen who are already in this business.

kapil is an able person in his field but he should not meddle in the affairs of other fields about which he may not have much knowledge.he should understand his decisions will have far reaching consequences.let there be debate about it and obtain views and constructive suggestions to improve what we have.why our medical institution cannot match iits? upgrade some to that level, have a regulating body minus corruption.that is the job which shold take precidence over other things.mr sibal, please make some existing or new medical institutions matching iits.

I was refering to admission based on 12th marks as proposed by SibalChootiya. You can appear in bihar board and write exams at home an secure 99% marks and get admission to IITs if sibal has his way.
