why not IISC ?
by vijaysankar k on Sep 13, 2010 10:46 AM

IISc is not in the list because there is no undergraduate course. so when take the avg its ranking goes too low. Next year IISc is going to start undergraduate because of this reason.Surely that will take iisc to top 100 within 3- 4 years. Anyway IISc is the best in India..

Top ranking universities
by Suram Verma on Sep 13, 2010 10:42 AM

Indian universities/institutes can also figure in top 10 of the world if the administrative set up of Indian institutes/universities is made like their counter parts in abroad, totally private, performance oriented, reservation free, free from country's political & beaurocratic interference and self-sustained money-wise. India is not lacking in quality education but almost in every sphere and people at the helm of affairs are not bothered at all to mend the things becuase it doeas not matter any way to them.

Totally agree with u...There r few Indians here who desperately want to put IITs in top slots in this ranking BUT they forgot that these OVER-HYPED IITs only create CRAMMING masters by VEERU SAHASRABUDHDHE(3 Idiots) like faculty...All these Btechs try to escape to US as soon as possible...This shows why IITs r not in top 100 here....

The reason they escape is also that our emphasis on research is practically zero when compared with universities in the west. Indian students join IIT's because not everyone can join BS in the US and IIT's are the premier institutes in the country. The western universities give good opportunities and allowances for students who do research where as in India only politics rules. If someone sits and looks into how much of funds are returned from IIT's back to government you will wonder if FUNDS are the problem too.

All IISCs-IITs standard have deteriorated over the years...No good research going on there...GOVT scientists who r working there want only their salaries to be in their A/C on 31 of every month...Whether any work they do or NOT...Hence the ranking...

Its all about the scientific temperament
by Praful Puranik on Sep 12, 2010 02:14 PM  | Hide replies

These rankings do not give the exact picture. Although its very true that the quality and quantity of research is superior in foreign universities as listed above, but the quality of students and professors is same everywhere. How it can be that students in US, UK are intelligent and those in India are dumb?? The thing is that the scientific temperament in foreign countries is more profound. The institutes are hundreds of years old. They get huge research funds from the government. The biggest flaw in our educational system is that it is not research oriented. People are like, "Are degree mil jayegi, job mil jayega aur shaadi bhi ho jayegi.." in India. When people say that there is brain drain and all that stuff...thats because adequate research facilities are not present in India. And with reservations coming into picture, the worst is yet to come...

IITH will be #1 in a couple of years.
by Bala on Sep 12, 2010 04:14 AM  | Hide replies

These are all stupid ranking. I think IITB is #1 and IITK #2.

About 50% of top JEE are from Andhra Pradesh. I think IITH will be #1 in a couple of years.

graduate or undergraduate ?
by ashish sinha on Sep 12, 2010 02:42 AM

I would like to know if this ranking is at graduate level or undergraduate. At graduate level the research component takes over education, and hence it is true. But this ranking will look much different at undergraduate level, where one may not measure by the number of research papers, but the success of the respective undergraduate program. In such a scenario, the indian institutes of tech would rank far above.
