Well heart is just a blood pumping machine and its the brain that do the thinking . Every one know that.. Now why we say heartbroken or gave heart etc ? Its just a term. lets look at somethings similar 1.When we said shipping address/cost. Do we really send courier in Ships these days ? No we don't. 2.We say get on the wheels .No one says get on the engine and tranmission and drive . 3.When you have to get ready people say pull up your socks does that mean you run with just socks on ? No ...
These are just phrases and dont take it literally. Some of the phrases are so common and if we use otherwise and try to correct to literal meaning it would sound odd. Everything is controled by brain and thats known. But imagine if you say I lost my brain instead of common phrase heart ? Who is kind hearted ? try saying kind brained :-) So odd rt .. So lets not get deeper and confuse. As some ad says its "Dillogical " :-)

The heart cannot think...the brain can..the message is sent to the heart to pump briskly by the brain only...
How does brain work ? It gets the signals from the eyes,ears,nose,mouth and the skin(touch)....
Now there is two part in love..one is Physical and another is Emotional...
The emotional feelings which are felt in the heart are basically due to secretion of some bio-chemicals like the PVC which works like wine and gives us the addiction...this secretions get reduced gradually as we grow old...
Now being a man,I would explain how love works in man..
As I told about the five senses above apart from this sometimes the sixth sense also work..the sixth sense or the hunch can also at times give the feeling"This is the one I am looking for"...
Every man has the concept of a woman inside him..this concept,form is developed over the years by seeing the women he countered,who influenced him..may be mother,may be relative,may be teacher...all together a concept is formed..and then later when the man meets a woman meeting those parameters to some extent subconsciously,the man's brain gets electrified...
Now the five senses,eyes say about the beauty,nose gives the fragrance,touch gives the feeling,ear listens the voice and so on..and an explosion occurs in the brain..which transmits signal to the heart..

Another thing,never think in life that this is the only person for whom I am dying for...life is transitory,so donot be so serious..if you are not succeeding once,try someone else...
But remember one thing in life,your sustainable love is dependent on your ability to generate wealth..you cannot remain in love for long in hungry stomach..so first make your self economically strong and love will follow you..
