It is not wives across the country. Down south, there is no idea what Karva Chauth is and why it is observed. I hope it stays that way, because it seems to be stereotyping and pushing women into the 'being a spouse only' role. Hurray for its non observance!

Dear goutaman
In the south in tamils homes i have seen ladies observe 'karadayan nonbu'which it appears to me is same as karva chouth since the target of the nonbu is the same i.e.husband's long life and welfare.
can some knowledgable person enlighten me further on this similartiy.

In fact there are two 'Karva Chauths' celebrated in South India.. Karadayan nonbu, and Varalakshmi nonbu/vratham.

Not two actually you have hundred karwa chauth like festivals: happy now ; please get lost now. You south indians are really deserve what you are known for in India. Why do you come to blog on North Indian topics just get yourself out of this place. We don't care about you.

Whatever suits you, Gautaman. But just for info, I have observed similar festival though under a different name (Atla Tadde), prevalent in Andhra Pradesh too.

This is another one of India's many festivals that are legendary. Observe or not, Life goes on.
