Previously they were known as brief case faculties because then they used to travel in public transport. Now they are having one of their own.Jokes apart business school needs constant interaction with business and industry hence people from industry are needed to be interfaced. So also the faculties are to go and interact with industry in the form of consultancy etc. Many times it is unilateral decision by working managers that they know the ultimate thing and has all capacity to preach about Management in Institute. And they too believed that B school teachers are only bookish and far inferior to them.Onthe other hand the B School teachers feel with constant research and constant touch with knoledge they are far superior to Practcing Managers who have been construed with the knowledge of their own enterprise assuming that is the world. After working both at corporate and academic I can say unfortunately both the perceptions are true.It is high time to start Industry-Institute interaction to devlop research based management education or else only there will be change from brief case faculty to schooter faculty to car faculty without making any substantial contribution to management education.(Of course money plays an imortant catalytic role in the whole process.) getting full time faculty at the salalry currently offerred is difficult. the students who pass out of B schools get more ctc than their professors who taught them. hence there is paucity of full time faculty. visiting faculty are two types = 1.who enjoys teaching even though the compensation is less 2.who really needs some extra money to pay off their commitments. I have studies the permanent faculty in iims - they also work as visiting faculty - pay to iims a portion of their income. they teach much less hours - say 110 hopurs per year! other times they teacn in universities and B schools all over - working as Professor in iim and leadig B schools is Brand name - In fact when they pay to iims a part of their outside income, if reduce this from the salary paid by iims, you will be astonished to know that iims spend much less on permanent faculty but their output is also less. Scooter faculty is devoted to the cause of eduction. It is the backbone of B schools. wheneverI fly, my next seat gentleman is Professors in iim, going to give lecture for 3 hours in a B school Many B.Schools invite them to boost the image of the Shool. In their Brochure, when the names of the iim professor appears it gives more credibility - students may benefit more out of scooter faculty than BRAND FACULTY zbdz[

The writer of this article deserves credit for observing and bring to light this trend. However, the view comparing such faculty to an electrician or a salesman is bad analogy. The article should have researched the reasons for such a trend too. Visiting faculties are just a form of academic outsourcing, not only because they are cheap but also because they are more professional at times compared to the permanent staff.
How do you select a permanent faculty? probably based on the candidate's marks/grades-they do not guarantee that they can teach well. For management, it is better that students be taught often, by experienced persons-since these experienced persons are unlikely to be attracted by the salaries offered by an academic institution , part time teachers have to be considered. This also helps the institutions cut costs - if the market deteriorates, how will you maintain the permanent faculty if there are too many of them in an institution? Hence there should be a good balane
The article has been written with li'l or no knowledge of the requirements to teach an MBA. MBA, unlike many other courses has more to do with day-to-day handling of business. The cheap, derogatory term " Scooter faculty" is an insult to the wise brains that ride them. These people have put years in working for companies and are now venturing out on their own. If a new entreprenuer can go in a mtero, why cant these faculties?
