All over the world, the financial world works more than 12 hours a day. And this world in India is in Mumbai. Here when everyone spends two hours one way to travel every day. Why cant everyone adapt British style 8 hours work. That is enough. There are s-cum bags in financial world who take pride that their office people work 14 hours a day!
Why these surveys does not speak about work carried to home? May be this is not a problem of west, where privacy norms are strictly followed, but in Indian firms, it is very common to do the support to onsite or offshore work, even in wee hours, midnight. It is simply the blurring lines between work and leisure, which is making this as an issue, Younsters who come from carefree world and funthusiastic, will do all sorts of surfing in work hours and also be willing to work all thru the day when situations demands. Proper work ethic in Indian work environment is still a dream. Please just dont get carried away by such simplistic surveys and these are particularly not suitable to Indian work environment , where HR orientation is not strict and more often just management tries to search convenient scape goats on such non-important matters.
It is indeed true that working people in office spends lots of man hours on surfing & chating. Many companiws have stopped this facility by putting proxy softwares.
As I changed companies very frequently and have now 9 IT companies' experience, I can undoubtedly say that employees in these Indian IT companies spent at lest half of their office hours spent on internet and other unofficial activities. Even then, they get huge and unrealistic packages for doing nothing but still not satisfied and demand for more. Finally all these extravagant spending by companies will be added to the prices of the product and services they produce and consumers will have to bear this entire burden in the end.
What is shocking is, though it is believed that the arrival of computer helped in reducing production cost and increased welfare to the customers, in reality, it has added more burden on the people.

6 hours are nothing,here in UK we sometimes spend whole day surfing. At lerast 10 hours a week is reasonable and companies accept that with out any problem. The only sites which are banned are the X rated sites but there is a way around that as well.
