corporate reservations
by vinod on Jul 06, 2010 05:18 PM  | Hide replies

reservations are clearly mentioned in govt sector(they need to validate the promotions given). in corporates there is no such thing, if at all u like your subordinate basis on any of these(number of ji hujoors, personal works, religion, caste, state) you can promote him.

Competent Performing employee

In today's complex world any body may be relevant in today's context only. It is a 20 20 match. Today you may be in tomorrow may not be. Depends on umpiring as well. Personally I know people very relevant today but totally thrown tomorrow. My husband is also a similar case with 35 years of service to the same institute.
Shyam Saran a competent bureaucrat is an example that intelligence and other traits mentioned in the artcile may not always carry you through. It is something else.

Practical Clues...

1. Nobody wants a sharp competent employee. He will soon be treated as a Nuisance.

2. An average, yes-man employee is valued much more - although it may not be said so - but its true.

3. If you want to work in a organization for LONG TIME - be an average, yes-sir employee. Proof is all around you - LOOK. All brilliant employees are GONE!!

4. Enjoy your work.

Too simplistic
by partha biswas on May 30, 2010 12:07 PM

Dear Mr.Nijhawan,
What you have written is basic, but TOO simplistic. I am well past my 60's but very actively involved still, professionally.I have worked MOSTLY for Multinationals, when they were few and far between in India,or High Technology driven organisations in basic manufacturing fields.AND always in the ABSOLUTE TOP NOTCH.Infact my biggest mentor, and friend, is also an Alumni of XLRI, but from the yester years.
I have kept pace with the growing needs, as professionally required, at every instance of my career. But the question that comes to my mind...WHAT IS SUCCESS? Financially well off? Because what you have implied is TOTALLY a SCHEMING ITERNARY to keep ahead of your collegues. And I have a faint feeling that you have in mind ONLY THE NEW SO CALLED TECHNOLOGY DRIVEN organisations called IT, which is NOT technology driven anyway, but application driven.
The biggest goal that anyone needs to address in ones life, you have COMPLETELY missed. That of being a RESPONSIBLE citizen with valued social objectives of Faith,Charity,Temperance and Justice.Think again about what I have written.Maybe in your circle of student education you start mentioning about these moral virtues.

Disturbing, bitter experiences
by Anshuman Vora on May 25, 2010 07:43 PM

Most of the messages are 'non-positive' ! Senior people who have shared real-life experiences here sound so sceptical that even such a well-written article, listing valid criteria, reads like some idealist, theoretical piece !

If all the readers' comments are wholly true & unbiased, it presents a sad reality of " What is Success in Corporate India " .

Valued Employee??
by PS on May 25, 2010 09:19 AM  | Hide replies

If this is for Indian organizations, then I say one thing.
In India,90% there is nothing like "Valued Employee"
In India, very few companies treat Emloyees working for them as an asset.
If an employee is treated as an asset, then only he/she becomes valuable.
But in our Indian companies,We have the concept that,A employee is like a machine so it is the job of organization to extract maximum output from it and throw it when it is of no use.
Organizations are using capitalist approach of pay very high when there is demand for employees and throw/dump the employees when there is no demand.
Very few organizations in India follow socialist approach. They pay less, but retain their employees in difficult times.
Employee in India are not Valued Employees but they are just machines.

Very few employers have developed the culture of valuing manpower as the most important resources indicated by 5Ms - Manpower, Machine, Money, Method and Materials. Unfortunately, most of the employers are Indian baniyas, gujjus, punjabis and marwaris who have scant regard for 'manpower' -due to lack of formal education. they treat manpower as 'use and throw' assets and use HR mananger as a tool of exploitation.Arrival of MNCs has made some changes in our corporate world with introduction of some latest HR techniques but with capitalist approach. Socialist approach has given some security to employees during tough times but does not diffrentiate 'horses from donkeys'.

Irrespetive of any approach, employees must value themselves by continuous evaluating themselves and keep on upgrading their skillset to remain 'valuable' in the jobmarket -if not with the current employer.

Others choice?
by vijay sharma on May 25, 2010 07:53 AM

It is easy to answer your own questions. But difficult to answer posed by others. Performance is an Art rather than a quanified item. Same Engineer /Technocrat is may be failure in one organization. But may be excellent in other or a country abroad. In Govt. sector, it is only your networking and pleasing ability to your boss. No body likes a sharp or knowledgeable junior exept when they need for thier own performance. So let these Book based sermons should be left for trainings and seminars. Pl see ground for perfect landing.
