Problem
by Kannada King on May 31, 2010 04:33 AM  | Hide replies

This is a problem in dravidian states (note, I said dravidian states, not south india). Many degrees can be bought in dravidian states and then they come to Karnataka to get jobs. We in Karnataka are not dravidians so are not part of the dravidian states but unfortunately we are clubbed with the rest of south indians because geographically we are in south india. Please stop refering to Kannadigas as Dravidians.

this is a problem with you indians. you think its okay to do wrong as long as foreigners do wrong. Don't you have any dignity in supporting fake degrees. If foreign degrees are so bad, why do you think IIT guys immediately go overseas to do their PG studies. None will even dare enter into PG in india because it is crap.

by Satya Pandey on May 25, 2010 08:14 AM  | Hide replies

These private universities esp these south Indian universities are bunch of fraud but north Indian ppl have the assumption that south Indian universities have very good standard of education which is a complete myth these south Indian universities and private universities instead of increasing the knowledge base of student distribute marks to students like anything can u imagine a MSC biotech student scoring 92% marks but this happen in south Indian univerties

Esp the south indian universities? Hmm.

Google 'ugc fake universities list'.
Click on the 1st result that you get. It's a UGC page.

Guess the difference is the south indians do it by being within the law & the north indians have the balls to do it by going outside the law. Outlaws. Robin Hoods. Whoa! ;)

educational enterprise
by raman govindan on May 24, 2010 07:48 PM

except top colleges and institutes like IIT, IISc, IIM most of institutions provide only run off the mill courses. so an institution that offers distance or part time courses are preferred by student community. once an institution is recognised, it becomes mostly another government dept. and loses all creativety. so enterprising elements elements fill up the gaps.

Artificial Shortages - Welcome to Mobocracy
by Argumentative Indian on May 24, 2010 12:02 PM

Ever heard of anyone paying capitation fees for a run of the mill univ in the US or UK? I haven't. Why, because their governments are strong? I feel its more because there are just so many run of the mill universities, that you can get admission somwhere or the other.

There is a premium only on premium education, as measured by the CUSTOMER i.e. the students, so places like Harvard & Stanford can charge more than the others, what about the famous University of Timbuktoo? - No capitation fees.

Its just like cars, if your rolling in the Moolah, you can pick up a Rolls Royce, but if you're not, you can also pick up a Maruti 800, its not a Rolls, but it meets the safety & emission standards of a modern small car.

For 50 years, the MAI BAAP of India, a.k.a. GOI, regulated the Indian Auto markets and we freaked out with the Fiat, Ambassador & Willy's / Mahindra Jeeps.

GOI should ensure for a Univ. / College
by Argumentative Indian on May 24, 2010 11:51 AM  | Hide replies

1) Minimum ratio of Faculty to Students & Quality & Quantity of physical infrastructure - labs, libraries, computer facilties as a ratio to Student population.
2) Transparency in accounts and performance whether IIM or IIPM, they all must put up the following on their website and send by courier / mail a copy of the documents on payment of a small charge to cover administrative costs:
a) Fees charged coursewise
b) Qualification & experience of Faculty - no need to mention individual name, but data updated weekly. Else in India they'll list Harvard Educated faculty who have left two months ago, since website is 'Being Updated'!
c) Average salary to faculty, gradewise.
d) Profit & loss account of Institution
e) Percentage of passing of students who appear for the course
f) Percentage of placements of students from colleg.
g) Optional Data: Students opting for further studies in India & Abroad, references of successful or even famous alumni, if any.

Let a 1000 Engineering, Medical & Business Schools bloom. Let there be education in droves, lets fight uneducation.

We don't need GOI to control, we just need them to ensure transparency and minimum standards.

Even BJP put Murli Manohar Joshi, whom I incidentally find personally unacceptable, as the HRD minister. His agenda was to increase GOI control not reduce it!

Its not Cong., or BJP, I'm sure if the CPM came to power, they would also do the same. It is a bunch of Feudal Zamindar's who think the Indian population needs to be RULED & when in the GOI, they are the RULERS.

In a democracy, people do not elect their peers, with slim salaries & obscene perquisites to rule over them, but rather to provide excellent governance services, as PUBLIC SERVANTS.

Mai - Baap Govt. - Indian Democracy - A laughter challenge
by Argumentative Indian on May 24, 2010 11:45 AM

Indian Govt.'s job is to control resources since they are the Mai - Baap.

In a democracy, the govts. job is to facilitate. Even the most 3rd Grade Politician (as if there are 2nd Grade politicians!) cannot publicly deny that education is important. A University does not consume any limited natural resource in large quantities like water, land, fossil fuel etc. Its a highly eco friendly, high end service business and we should set up as many universities as possible.

Moreover, there should not be any restrictions to set up private universities. Just for one minute think, what would have happened if India had such a stupid structure to set up private hospitals, and people only had to depend oun Municipality to clean the Garbage (Kachra) & Provide Healthcar, possibly we'd have a population of less than 70 Cr. (on account of death due to non availability of medical facilities).

This corruption is not due to the individual (ofcourse he is responsible & a dishonest person), but due to a rotten system, designed for abuse. Who is this fellow to approve or disapprove a Medical College, who the hell is anyone to approve or disapprove anything that is in the public domain in a Democracy? Is a college a deal between private individuals? Is this the approval of the design of a person's personal residence to comply with municipal rules????

There MUST be clear guidelines and standards and the approval process must be available online to allow common citizens, including the competition of the said colleges to access the data and compliance with norms so that all minimum norms are followed and there is no question of corruption.

If it can get worse, let it. Only then will aam admi wake up.
by Sathish N on May 24, 2010 11:19 AM

The dangerous trend started long back when degree seats started getting sold in the form of seats on the basis of capitation fee. This is only deterioration of the trend. If someone with more money can get degree not on the basis of merit, why should some with lesser money not get an degree from these online univs. The real fix is fixing the moral values we have given a go by!
