Ishan an advice.
by anand on May 17, 2010 10:18 PM  | Hide replies

My advice is please take note of my point. Go for PhD in US. In india there are not many possibilities in theoretical physics too. If you have made up ur mind for Theory my advice, please please dont go to string theory or quantum gravity or gravitational waves or cosmology. Today these are the field with least interest by anybody in the world except India. Once you finish your postdoc and come back to india to fnd job, you will never get any as there are almost no position in this saturated fields. Again the way research is conducted in India is completely wrong. The profs dont have problems and they keep telling you to learn fundamentals to buy time. Since there is no pressure as in Europe or US, you will take hell lot of a time to finish PhD. Infact waste a lot of time. Take up quantum optics or quantum computation for that matter. In India there is almost no research opportunities in this field.
Apply with your credentials to US universities or Universities in Europe. For theory language will not be a barrier for you. Some of the people whome you can apply to are Anton Zeilinger, Peter Zoller, Maciej Lewenstein , Sandro Stringari, Dieter Jaksch etc. Type cold atom news in google and go to that site you will find many research grups there. Pleace take it seriously. For PhD its more important to have an extremely good professor than studying in a big institute.

For theory europe is a good place. You dont need GRE for germany UK or for that matter austria, spain etc. There are extremely good theoreticians there. Not like the many here who only grow hair and beard to show off as great scientists. when some scientist from abroad is here they start to lick his feet. everyone here is busy to show colaboration with some prof from a university abroad. 80 pc of profs in top class research institutes in india are crap real craps. They stress on fundamentals, since buy teaching a course for 10 yrs or so they know many things by heart. These guys cannot think anything noval.

Good advice. German universities are best for theoretical physics.

GATE topper: Maths, physics are beautiful
by raman govindan on May 17, 2010 10:25 AM

"physics helps explain many natural phenomena by some basic principles" and mathemetics is the tool further it.

because of necessity to earn decently at an earlier age many brilliant students prefer engineering, technology and management study and the better prospect they offer in career and leave pure sciences on the wayside. that is an unfortunate situation. only general prosperity, availablity of a career that pays and a society that respects scholors at every level (not only the nobel prize winning ones) can only change it.

having said that love for any subject/discipline and dedicated study should take one to higher level without much difficulty.

Reservation is NOT the requirement, hard work like this
by ravitalisma on May 17, 2010 09:43 AM  | Hide replies

Reservation and appeasing a caste is NOT the requirement for the country. Supporting hard work is the need. Reservation has taken us centuries back in time. only few will stay in present time

reservation is a must ...in JOBS...
Those who see themselves as extraordinary should not ask government to PROVIDE JOBS for them.
If you are really a GENIOUS be NARAYAN MURTHY, DHIRU BHAI AMBANI or SOME ONE LIKE THAT.....If you are intent to do GOVERNMENT JOB....YOU are Certainly PARALYZED ..seeking a government JOB is like seeking a secure RESERVED HEAVEN and THAT IS THE BIGGEST RESERVATION EVER existing.

Besides all this, reservations keep the issue of caste system alive. The divide willincrease the gulf between upper & lower castes & further split our society. Ecnomic backwardness is a better criteria for reservations. aslso there is a need to stop seond generation reservations as these children get proper upbringing & education
