Will benefit
by Praveen Goud on Mar 18, 2010 09:24 PM  | Hide replies

Indians are flocking abroad for education. Starting foreign insitutes in india
1. Will double the educated indians.
2. Will allow local indian institutes compete with foreign insitutes to survive.
3. Will benefit both india and foreign countries in reducing the investment on training and cost of research.
4. Will benefit both developing and developed countries to reap the benefits of globalisation as against one-way of developing countries against developed countries. This also helps for social and cultural exchange among developing and developed countries.

Allowing foriegn universities with subsidies such as in security , discount in rentals as applicable in foriegn countries should be provided.

Allowing foriegn universities with no mandatory investment may turn this into exploitation business mostly by pseudo indians from abroad itself, mafia or religious fanatics for their vested interests. Universities should be forced to invest to reap the returns through research on trained students.

Please read the interview again, carefully.

1. The presence of foreign institutions is going to be a drop in the bucket.

2. Secondly India's higher education problem has to be solved by India any not by foreigners. Foreigners are not going to help in its improvement.

3. Experience shows that a lot of the countries that have opened their doors, and when the floodgates have been opened by them, a lot of as they say rubbish have come in along with nuggets of gold.

4. In Singapore it is by invitation only (that foreign universities can set up shop). You only get at the door only if they ask you. And they are providing direct subsidies by way of facilities and rent discounts and all.

5. If India is going in the opposite direction, where you come to the door without being invited but you have got to pay to enter, I think that is problematic

6. The foreigners -- nowhere in the world foreign institutions that come to education hubs focus on research. They focus on teaching because that is where money is to be made,

nobody studies in college
by Devdutt Nayak on Mar 18, 2010 09:24 PM  | Hide replies

everyone wastes time.

if a few US / UK / French univs set up branches, soon Japanese, Taiwanese and Korean univs will follow.

Overall, this can only help.

We need more seats, more variety and tough competition to the status quo.

So you have to fight the brute not with words but with greater might.

From a simplistic point of view,

"it cant get any worse than this".

As for India's problems, the bulk of college graduates are not going to solve them, its going to be the guys that stay back or come back.

For both, we need something like this.

Bravo Dr Altbach

He has honestly suggested echoing the feelings of great sons of India. But our minister seems hell bent to do it the other way, aping the foreigners - short sightedness.
