Prof. Altbach's observations are interesting but it is by no means the last word in this debate. Let us make a beginning and see how the system works. Along the way, we will learn to fit these in to our system, appropriate regulatory bodies will emerge. There will be some failures. Let us learn from them and make adjustments where necessary. We needn't be pessimistic but look at it as an opportunity.
Sibal is not attacking the fundamental of the dearth of quality higher education in the country. Research in North America is driven largely by the industry and then that research is protected by IP laws (patents etc.) Necessity is the mother of invention and one cannot reverse that. If one really wants to create quality research institutions in the country - pay the faculty higher salaries (comparable to what MBAs get). There is no dearth of talent in the country, however, the talent needs to be honed and given its due respect which currently is missing. It is the environment which at present is not conducive to quality research in the country and not the problem of quality institutions. Inviting foreign universities is a futile effor that may benefit a small percentage of the population at best but not India at large.
Most of the western country's colleges do not have enough students. Hence, they want to come to India and China where they can find huge number of students. It is new colonization process. Nothing.
Like garbage economy, garbage education is not required in India. What congress under the pretext of India govt. is doing at the direction of some one who wants materialisam to grow and there by create market forever for people of are hungry of business.
