I really appreciate this move, but....

Firstly, universities like Mumbai University simply harass good students, thus making them feel like they have no value. Secondly, rather than a University such as the Mumbai University monopolizing and making life for students hell, we could have more variety plus these universities will be registered with the UGC too. So, we actually have not much to worry about. We could still worry about how the staff at the foreign universities in India (if from abroad) may view the Indian students. Would they reduce their marks or fail them just because of racial discrimination? Will students feel that they are getting value for their parents' or their hard earned money?

will they help us in the long run?
by arulalan on Mar 25, 2010 08:49 AM

I am a community based primary care paediatrician, finished my MD,DNB 20 years ago. My first daughter, will be entering college in 2011.I am writing this as a parent. In health there is a concept called Herd immunity. If you imagine community as a individual, then the community as a will a immunity level. If that community average is poor, then all,are susceptible to illness. Suppose you are giving chicken pox vaccine at a cost of Rs 1400 to your child. You assume that your child will be protected. Answer is no. Unless the herd immunity is sufficiently high, your child despite vaccination is susceptible. Similarly, we are bothered only about our children's education. Where they are going to live after 20 years? Here, in this country. If opportunities for the disadvantaged not going to develop, what is the use of our children getting foreign university education. Will they serve our interest? Will they help society. We need education, which can help us and by our work help others. As Stephen Covey puts, Interdependance is more important than independance. Will the foreign university course content will help us to achieve this? We cook our food in gas cylinders. We drive our bikes in petrol. all are subsidised. It is the poor who by their large numbers, contribute to this. Will the foreign universities take this into account. There are private institutions in our vellore town who are doing wonderful service.

GOOD MOVE. HOPE PEOPLE CASH IN
by ns girish on Mar 22, 2010 07:48 AM

I think its a great move in the sense:

- No need to go to foreign countries to get degrees. One of the differences between developed countries and developing countries is EDUCATION. In countries like US, u have so many good quality institutions compared to India where u have only the IITs, NITs and all those deemed universities most of which are there to mint money.

- Education quality improves as everyone can study in quality places

- India's literacy rate improves. As literacy improves

- Hopefully this put an end to this bloody quota system proposed by that sick Arjun singh

- Our so called deemed universities have to match up to international standards. No more playing around with life of students and minting money

- Teaching Quality, profession, Pay will get better. Let teachers also earn money. Hope Teaching becomes a eligible profession like IT

Hope it becomes a reality soon.

Its good so that Indians no more flock to western countries in the name of education, as they are already a menace to most of the western countries.Doesnt India have cabbies to be driven around or what?

A whole new outlook
by tom cyril on Mar 18, 2010 10:09 AM

I hope that it brings a whole new outlook into education.I am truly not satisfied with the method of education prevalent in India(majority of the institutions). The education that u get from outside India has a completely different dimension.

educating the uneducated
by rajesh saini on Mar 18, 2010 10:03 AM

Is this step going to ensure that education reaches the underpriviliged and have nots who are crores in number? This step of Govt is providing more opportunities and choices to those who already have access to education. What govt needs to do is to take firm measurable steps to provide education as a right to those who cannot afford it. Govt has just focused on the top 10% and missed out on the majority of the target 50% where it would really make a difference in their lives and in the lives of people around them!

Foreign universities will do a lot of good in India....
by SS Kumar on Mar 18, 2010 05:45 AM

Striving for excellence is a trait missing in India, where everyone wants to hog the lime- light using shortcuts. The Foreign Universiti- es will hopefully usher in basic values of honesty, integrity and true professionalism, missing in our present systems, where politic- ian uncles pull the strings remotely.
