Repeat a lie till it considerd to be a truth
by manish kumar on Mar 12, 2010 10:23 PM  | Hide replies

If I am not wrong, Mr. Baru is the press advisor of PM. If it is so, then he is getting paid to praise Mr. Singh. I am happy, atleast he is one person in Govt of India, who is doing his job. Regarding the hardship he faced during his childhood, I think only a few privileged one have not faced it at that time. How much qualified he may be, I am afraid, he will be compared only with the worst among the Indian PMs.

Inflation,Terrorism,Fake Currency.........
by Pranay Munshi on Mar 12, 2010 08:11 PM

Manmohan Singh knows how much this things (Inflation,Terrorism,Fake Currency.........) affects the country , where he is taking any step to solve all this problems.
After again becoming the PM he demand for next 100 days to solve the problems, but where is the result, there would be no result because no step has been taken towards it. Thogh he is accepting that 2 lac crore rupees fake currency is spreaded in all over India but what he did to solve this prob. May be normal person can't understand it but he is the great economist of India( I think it's all Rumour), he can understand it better than any other person, How fake currency affects the economy of a country. This time Pakistan's ISI got everything to print Indian Currency including Special paper which is used in Currency from the same source where India purchase it. But there is not a single instance where India complained to Pakistan because it is not the matter of Muslim Vote Bank it is the Matter of Development/Progress of India. And if we talk about Inflation, it is breaking all the previous records because one of his minister (Sharad Pawar) is much hunger of money than poor people of India who don't have 2 times meal of a day. Thogh his govt. is airing the advertisment of supplement food of Pulses.
May be me and those are reading this article not feeling the exact heat of Inflation,Terrorism and Fake Currency because we are little in good condition.
But think about those poor people who have less demand for

No doubt Dr. Singh is an achiever
by Darshan on Mar 12, 2010 07:50 PM

I have to personally salute Dr. Singhs humility, academic excellence and achievements eventhough I may not be in agreement with his politics. (Infact he is not a politician at all but Congress didn't have a better option)Otherwise where else you would find people leaving comforrts and plush jobs to come back and serve their country ? He is not corrupted which also shows his strength of character. Whatever people say..in terms of being "nobody to somebody" Dr.Singh is definitely an inspiration.I wish that he was a little bit more independant in political thinking.

Qualification?
by Harish Menon on Mar 12, 2010 05:35 PM

"Later, when he was working at the United Nations under the famous economist Raul Prebisch, he got an offer to join Delhi School of Economics as a lecturer. He immediately accepted that invitation and decided to return to India. Dr Prebisch was shocked. So many brilliant economists would be delighted to get a UN job and this young man was giving it up to teach in India? "You are being foolish," Prebisch told Manmohan Singh, adding, "But, sometimes in life it is wise to be foolish!"

--This alone is enough to Qualify Dr Singh to lead India. Not many in the current lot of MPs can show a combination of such high qualification and patriotism.

In 1940s, there was no electricity even in cities
by Amit Chakraborty on Mar 12, 2010 05:28 PM

How stupid of Rediff to make such buzz about these VIPs for anything. How can you just forget that in 1930s and 40s, the electricity or water supply or such things which we now call basic amenities (some not even invented) did not exist even in the cities and let alone the villages. Even now thousands of villages in so-called modern India people live without these amenities. Myself coming from a village got electricity at my house only on the day when the Babri Maszid was demolished in 1992. I was then sitting for my HS test exams. I do not see it as an obstacle as I had perfect eyes to read my book with our kerosine light. There is no scientific study suggesting that a person has better chance of success if he/she studies with electric light than kerosine light. Dr. Singh has certainly achieved greatness by his deeds but please do not give it an extra spice by telling that he came from a poor background. In his time if he was poor, then the rest of India was much more poor than him. And this applies to him even now as we all know that he has property worth 10 crores whereas 350 million people of India cant even buy two meals a day (they say, BPL or below poverty line) in 2010. Rediff should rather project people who are dealing with poverty now, yes that is in year 2010, yet making their presence felt to the society.

India''s best students: Dr Manmohan Singh
by Hebbar R on Mar 12, 2010 05:26 PM  | Hide replies

A person who has come up this hard way should know the value of money. He should know that the Govt is spending way too much upon itself. He should know that people are put to hardships due to increase in prices. He should know that even a tiny bit of increase in inflation hurts a majority of people. He should know that corruption is eating the economy from the inside. He should know that so much more money needs to be spent on education, if common people (specially rural children)are to be educated. He must know that all people are equal and by the Govt making some as more equal, it is creating trouble and encouraging mediocrity. He must know that the problem in India is over population and that needs to be corrected. Alas, we see none of these from the "Economist" PM.

As a person he may be great and his qualifications even greater, but as a PM a lot more is expected from him than what has been seen till now. It may be proper to even say that he has been a failure as PM.

By the way, was he not the Finance Secretary/RBI Governor etc when all those pre-historic kind of Budgets were being presented?

He was doing that out of compulsion -- it is a known fact that among the major economists of that era, Singh stood out as a dissenting voice.

You may be right. You post here says that he gave up a UN job to come to India to teach. That is great and shows a sense of commitment. But, a person with such a commitment, would stand by his principles and say that he would rather leave than do something that is not good for India. It will not be wrong to say that he could still have made a difference in all those Budgets.
