Will you say the same thing, when someone from the song-dance shows make their parent proud like this kid? Why you disrespect art? I am also against people who stress their kids for something they wish. Real parent is the one who identifies the kid's inner talent. Nature has made everybody good in something. Only thing remaining is we have to find that.

What's the use? Mug up something and vomit out.. Unless it is something hands on that helps in improving creativity, there is no point in wasting time on these kind of contests.. Pl. note that I am not criticizing this boy, but the contest.

Uncle,
You are the only one who really understands! Can you please tell every one you meet and especially all your kids, relatives etc? This way I will have less competition when I attempt the IIT JEE next year and possibly the Civil services exams in next 4 years. Please keep telling everyone that all these competitions are waste of time and useless and discourage kids from participating. This will make it easy for me!

1000 times better then the programmes such as Nach ke dekha etc on Indian television.
What use are they or the performance to any one in life.
At least this is geography and knowledge which he can use for rest of his life if becomes a geologist.

Ajith,

Body is not just about the brain so that you study a lot and use it in life. Other organs also have their function and dance is a form of expression. Have you noticed how a small kid, after he learns to walk, would automatically dance when he/she hears a rhythm or music? with no one teaching them? thus thats the law of nature. Every creature has a rhythm and so does human beings via dance. So people who have talent to dance are enjoying themselves in these shows and if do it well and is the best, then why not pocket some money? If you do not like the show, there are empteen number of other shows. Whether you do not like the dance reality show, I would request you to sometime shake your leg and dance freely to some tune or the waves and experince it. Its pure marvel. May the force be with you, Ajith bhai.

It's about mental recall. For a starter try recalling every word you said since morning, and you will realise that it takes such a long time to remember. Sometimes you are unable to even do 50%

Sanskrit learning was done in this format to exercise the mind and encourage fast and accurate recall. Apart from this, what was being taught is also beneficial for the mind and soul. Double whammy.

Rote for exams might not be an ideal situation, but somehow Indians tend to do better with numbers and words than many others. It is working at some level, while most children in western countries are dependent on machines to think for them.

actually this is 'spelling' competition; seems like they have added a bit of GK to add to the drama for TV presentation etc.

for spelling, we dont necessarily have to mug up; if you watch any of the telecasted edition of this competition, you will notice that the kids mostly rely on phonetics/pronunciation rules to 'arrive' at the correct answer... moreover the spelling for some words depends on the origin... so the kids do confirm the origin before starting their exercise of unravelling the spelling.

so, its a mind exercise; the competition or the expertise in spelling itself may not bring about creativity or lead the kids to being innovators etc. but its a means to sharpen the mind, broaden your horizon, thought process etc... it all adds up.

Well said...I saw many times, many South Indians always jealous about each other states in south, like Telugu people jealous about Tamil, Tamil about Telugu etc...People from other states except south states, I saw few people about this mentality.

Good luck Kabir. I am sure that staying in India and achieving something deserves far more recognition than staying in the US where the opportunities to excel are far more. I wish you luck Kabir. Make us proud.

It is no joke for the kids to crack IIT, Civils, IIM..etc. What India is lacking is civilization, with which it could have chosen qualified leaders, would have done their part for the society to maintain cleanliness, law and order, anticorruption and help others without checking their background.
