First of all I haven't read the book. So I don't know what the others mean. But as far as Iyers and fish eating is considered, it is only in South India that Brahmins don't consider eating non-veg. But in the south east (West Bengal, Orissa etc.) It is perfectly normal. In fact Bengalis make fish eating a part of the Brahmin girl's diet once she gets married. It is nothing strange.
India's religion is one of the oldest . But people are still not educated on environmental issues. this pic shows how the belief is misused by contaminating the ocean...... great people ......the authorities have to ban this immediately....

Please visit a few up market hotels in TN in Madurai, Coimbatore and Chennai during lunch on Saturdays and Sundays. Chances are you will see a few Iyer families you may know tucking into fish and chicken on the sly !!
I have seen many in Madurai and Chennai. And one man even came up to me and entreated me not to talk about his family's non-veg. consumption in our neighbourhood ! I replied that I did not consider his 'veg' status as something so interesting as to make me talk to anyone about what he ate or did not eat !!
