Yoga
by Dilip Mahanty on Jul 15, 2010 05:22 AM

Yoga is a holistic apoproach to upliftment of body, mind and spirit. Sage Patanjali in his famous treatise "Yoga Sutra" has set down the 8 fold path(Ashtanga yoga)for physical, mental and ultimately- spiritual realisation.Yama, Niyama, Asana and Pranayama constitute only the physical side of this great treatise. The other 4(pratyahara, dharana, dhyana & samadhi)are for mental and spiritual development.A lot of accent is being placed on the asana & pranayama aspects of yoga these days -no doubt fueled by acceptance of their benefit by global celebrities! Because the West has accepted it many in India feel that is the way to go! If people were to delve deep into Patanjali's teachings and adopt Ashtanga yoga fully(instead of on a piece meal basis)the country would not face the health and social problems it is experiencing now! It is sad that with the gems available in India, we still look to the West for acceptance before we acknowledge them.Given the wealth of our heritage in a variety of areas we should be pioneers not followers.

Please dont dilute
by Tamil Indian on Jul 15, 2010 01:59 AM

Hi Rediff - please dont dilute the utility and appeal of the practice by writing stupid things. Please give a sequence or an overiew of the pratice you suggest and just say see if you get some overall benefits from it. Please dont claim lofty things and sound silly to the outside world. Just a suggestion!

"Monsoon invites health problems like honey attracts bees".... ha ha ha

See the comparison!

Monsoon does not invite anyone. We are one of the trillion creatures who need monsoon.

Misleading title
by Orient Mystique on Jul 14, 2010 05:28 PM  | Hide replies

The title gives one the sensational idea that monsoon (i.e. the time of its arrival, amount of rain etc.) can be managed by practising yoga.

When you open and see the article, it is all about managing one's physical health by certain asanas (exercises) to guard against the ill effects of monsoon (rains, change of weather etc.) on people.

These days editors in media have very poor attention to detail - be it newspapers, magazines, TV channels or websites / portals!
