is english compulsory subject in best of five for ICSE student
by rohit choudhury on Jun 03, 2011 10:58 PM

so many students and teachers of ICSE school are confused about best of five subjects.some teachers of ICSE school say that english is compulsory suject. As per supreme court of india student can take any five subject from Group I and II.it means that english is not compulsory subject.Further if english is compulsory subject then how it is best of five?if english is compulsory then it means english plus best of four from group I and II.that means ICSE students will be deprived not only from taking subject from grIII but also they can take only 4 subjects as per their choice.
hence i request you kindly clearify whether english is compulsory or not for selecting the best of five subjects from group I and II.waiting for your reply

You can fail in 1 subject and still pass ICSE and go to Std.XI.

Internal evaluations... schools help their students to get maximum marks.

ENCOURAGING MEDIOCRITY
by John Travolta on Jul 14, 2010 09:05 PM

The Supreme Court decision has come as a shock. While SSC students had to study only 6 subjects, the ICSE students had to study 7 subjects. The group 3 subject like Technical Drawing though scoring is a tough one. Its just like Maths which is scoring, but you cannot say it is easy. SSC syllabus compared to ICSE is very simple and easy. Besides the so called scoring ICSE subjects pale if you look at the marks that SSC students have scored in language papers. SSC students this year have scored atrociously high marks bordering 100%.
It is really shameful that in India mediocrity always gets preference over merit. With the kind of people at the helm whether it is polticians or bureaucrats or those in media the future looks bleak.

Where is the injustice? Your daughter got more when 6 subjects were taken into account and the other girl got more when 5 subjects were taken into account - what's wrong?

Best of 5

When education is a state subject as per our constitution, I do not understand why should other boards like CBSE, ICSE etc.should have their schools in states. It is a clear interference of Central Authorities on the state subject. This problem is not confined to Mahrashtra alone. In fact there is mashroom growth of shcools run by above Boards in UP and all the southern states. Government and parents in Maharashtra have now awaken but in Tamilnadu some 10 years back percentile formulae was introduced by the state government to protect the interest of students taking the exam of state Board. This formulae is still in vogue but the same formulae was held as unconstitutional in Maharashtra by the Bombay High Court. Are other states not bound by the same constitution.

Don't think with a repulsive mind. Maharashtrian Children (in Maharashtra and different parts of the country) also study in Schools having CBSE or ICSE syllabus ............ You don't know, TN has a large no. of Schools having CBSE affliation. CBSE there has a regional office.
People working in CBSE or member in CBSE are from all parts of India (including Maharashtra).
Don't think with a dirty or suspicious mind on such a pious thinking called EDUCATION. CBSE/ ICSE Board teaches nothing unconstitutional......
Newton's Law is same whether u study in Maharashtra Board, CBSE, ISCE or International Schools....
You don't know ....... CBSE/ ISCE board schools are also in diff. parts of Globle where Indian people working in various Indian Offices/ Emabssies/ Consulate etc. can send their children to these schools so that whenever they are transferred back to India, their children don't suffer....
Nothing is vogue as thought by you... Its just a matter of choice... Matter called EDUCATION should be given respect and NOT PLAYED on.....
Read Constitution before making any adverse comment....... India belongs to all Indian irrespective of any state, religion, language etc. etc.
Don't create division of MIND among fellow indians......

Repulsive mind is yours.People like you have "hyped" the ICSE/CBSE patterns giving them more of a "status" issue.I hate when educated people like you giving upper hand to ICSE/CBSE patterns when the matter of the fact is "its the same" ICSE/CBSE is objective and that is subjective blah blah..Its shameful on the part of High Court to hold a large number of SSC students at ransom just to entertain a small percentage of "influential" ISCe /CBSE students and their parents. I would say scrap these ICSE/CBSE and follow the respective States' education Pattern

At many places, the influentail are pampered across the STATE, across the continent, acrooss in any matter 9let us suppose) the World... What u do there????
People who hype, who are hyped belong to all states, country etc....
Subjective or Objective question etc... there are many yardstick to judge anything and there may may be different parameter to judge people in diff. boards.. EDUCTION system also differs from country to country.. You CANNOT CLAIM that those score in Subjectives, become Scientist and those who score in Objectives are hyped or "given upper hand". A person who really studies hard, IS ABLE TO ANSWER ALL QUESTIONS IRRESPECTIVE OF Subjective or Objective or IRRESPECTIVE of any BOARD.
With what moral/ legal/ constitutional authority u accuse High Court.......
Correct your Mind and utlize it in a constructive way........

You are absolutely right, Tamil Nadu and Karnataka have a system called normalization which evens out the unfair advantage enjoyed by ICSE and CBSE. In Mumbai ICSE students don't study Marathi and even study commerce and agriculture in place of maths and science. they have a seventh subject - you won't believe it - PT/Yoga/Music and that too with 50% internal assessment.

Merely 8000 ICSE students kept 14 lakhs students to RANSOM.We all know that students studying in ICSE belong to "elite" class and most of students studying there have enough money power to take services of top lawyers like Soli Sorabjee and Mukul Rohatogi. The fees charged by ICSE affiliated schools are approx.Rs.2.00 lakhs per year. This is not the case with CBSE affiliated board.Maharashtra govt. should teach ICSE affiliated board "PROPER LESSON".

Also note that these parents have been approaching the High Court at the n'th hour, so that there will not be enough time to reason out the issue and back it up with data. The best 5 decisison was announced much earlier, but these people purposely waited till the last moment so that the Court will try to maintain Status Quo. A clever strategy, which had worked well for the last 3 years.Tough luck this time. FYI, if you look at the results of the last several years, the Marks of the top student in SSC will get him 28th/29th number in ICSE based on "Raw Marks". I Do not need to spell out what the outcome would have been if all students appeared for the same exams. The percentile formula which has been succesfully used in TN was also set aside by the Bombay HC, with probably lack of time to deal with the issue. This time the State Government was firm on [uttong an end to this "Trickery" hence approached the SC.

You are expessing your views on "Best of 5" topic here. OK!!!!
Don't relate all things/ all history, matter etc. with this topic.....
How u came to conclusion that the whole country is "biased".....
There are people from Maharashtra in Delhi (along with Indians from other parts of the country) who are in Power and framing and implementing policies of our country and making India march ahead with development and progress in all spheres.

Remember,
Fractured mentality/ society etc. does more harm to itself.... things are realised in long run...

Do you seriously feel that a person getting just about "pass marks" or "a fail " in Maths or Science would have scored even just "decent marks", forget about "High marks" in the other subjects? For all practical purposes the lowest marks will most probably be in a language paper.

Best of 5 Policy
by treesa joseph on Jul 14, 2010 11:34 AM

The long pending battle for Best of 5 is resolved. To bring unity across all board must be the strong agenda for the Government as well as the Education Department of centre as well as the state. It should work on a common syllabus and evaluation system. The ICSE board students can score better in subjects like Environmantal studies and subjects from Group III. Where as in SSC board students they have 4 graded subjects which include Environmantal studues and Computer Studies. We parents strongly recommend to give marks to all subjects instead of grading system so that SSC stdents can score better and be par with ICSE students. Our Education Minister and Government should workout a systematic plan for the next year to avoid such unwanted discrepancy across varous Boards

The best of 5 for all is a compromise formula worked out by the apex court.

It cannot be a good decision it can serve only as a compromise formula.

The sate Minister who has destroyed the sanctity of education by introducing unconstitutional discrimination must be casticised by the apex court.

ICSE/CBSE naatak has destroyed it and not SSC board. Its the hype of being a superior source of education that is disturbing. SSC rocks and will keep on rocking!
