I never believed that negative thinking was bad...
by Suresh Bhave on Jul 09, 2010 09:53 PM

There are a lot things happening that are bad for everyone except the perpetrators of those bad things and I cannot see how positive thinking can help that. However hard I might try to convince the politicians to think positive for the betterment of all the people on India, will that convince them? If it could, after Gandhi, all the entire Indian system would have been squeaky clean godly. In fact, it is the negative thinking about the positive results that works in such cases. Look how the negative thinking Naxals have given the politicians sleepless nights. Does a Gandhian satyagraha work today. Try it, you will be put behind the bars on trumped up charges, at best, people will be paid to allege every sort of wrongdoing against you. The world is neither positive nor negative in its entirety, it simply 'is'. It exists and we have to think positive or negative or not at all depending upon the circumstances.
Management science deals with a very narrow slice of life, the working life. It has specific aims. Conclusions drawn in the workplace are not applicable to the whole life because the purpose of life is undefinable.

Positive thinking
by kiran kumar on Jul 08, 2010 05:21 PM

Everything is rated based on results. Same is the case with positive thinking. If I am in a tricky situation and think "All is well" and succeed, it is good. If I fail, I will have to face the consequence.

There is a thin line between confidence and over confidence; Assertiveness and Aggressiveness; Ambitious and Greed. When we are in that range, it is only when everything is over we reallise which side of the line we are.

To remian positive or pullout the cards is essentially a decision making process and as per de Bono Hats system All the hats ( White hat – Facts & Information, Red hat – Feelings & Emotions, Black hat – Negatives, Yellow hat – Positive, Green hat – New Ideas, Blue hat – The Big Picture ) are equally important. Part of them are Yellow and Black.

Positive thinking is good, but one should be absolutely sure on the (quantifiable) criteria on when to pull out. And all efforts should be 100% until the decision on pulling out is made.

Is positive thinking overrated?
by raman govindan on Jul 07, 2010 12:21 PM  | Hide replies

positive or negative is relative. if a boy or a girl does 16 hours of study and succeeds in a competetive examination, the success looks positive. the absence of fun, the company of classmates, participation in sports and games, the stress to score the best ranks appears negative.

the otherway of looking at is the " fun, the company of classmates, participation in sports and games" are positive and the "16 hours of study, the stress to score the best rank and success in a competetive examination is negative .

when i got the promotion and the transfer, i gradually lost the company of my close friends and collegues, the comfort of and the confidence in a familier environment. but i gained new collegues and understanding of the new world beyond my knowledge.

in digital technilogy, it is often quoted that "negatives have as much informmation as positives.

The statement "don't think that something that happens to you is negative" itself is positive thinking :-)
