Yes its true...I too have that experience to drive through the country. In 1992, I along with my 5 friends taken the south tour on 3 bikes. From Korba (Chhattisgarh) - Kanyakumari (taking coastal route of Bay of Bengal) - Trivandrum - Munnar - to Bangalore-Goa-Jaipur-Delhi-and back to Korba -45 days -just holding a big road map...that really was a great experience. But still I miss the Northern experience which I will try to take on a bike tour to Ladhak...before I turns to 50...

Yep, Kannadiga locals have been known to assault outsiders, if you are speaking different language and don't have poster of actors on your vehicles. Its in the news.

Frankly speaking I never faced such an incidence during my solo trip to Bengaluru... But irrespective of South or North every state or city has its own local culture and travelers need to respect that... Give respect and you will get that in return, thats what I experienced
