by rkms on Jul 01, 2010 11:09 PM

iPad is nothing. There is a rural fridge called MATKA or GHADAA, and cycle that can float.

I disagree - iPad is ossum :)
by Ranjan Kant on Jul 01, 2010 07:49 PM  | Hide replies

I usually choose not to comment on such divisive issues - but since this article is so hopelessly one-sided, let me dispel some myths:
1. Official support: iPad is gonna be available in India in 3 months max and it has an international warranty of 1 year, so better grab it now - I have rarely heard of Apple devices going wrong (iPhone 4's antenna issue is a case in point, but we are talking of a tested device here)
2. Mobile connectivity: Dood - did you test the MTNL 3G, I made a micro-sim out of the original sim and its frigging ossum !
3. Price: I got iPad 16GB wi-fi 3G for ~31k from US and now I do much more on it than I wud ever do on my BB smartphone - consume media, operate MS office (thru Docs2Go) and read books !
4. Apple wudnt dare betray its customer base and if you wud study the intl blogs, the next gen is not due before mid - 2011.

You call yourself a techblog ? For starters, try reading Gizmodo and Endgadget and get some of their objectivity (which means having a balanced view for the uninitiated) in your writing.

Not impressed.

Dear Ranjan,
Um...I do read the blogs you refer to - many people do. They are excellent. You are more than welcome to criticise what has been written in the blog but to descend to insults is a trifle uncalled for and unnecessary. I would just like to clarify a few issues you have talked about:
1. Grab the iPad now and the official warranty will not be available for you even when the device is released in India. That's why we recommend waiting. As for "iPad is going to be available in 3 months max," we hope you are right, but would love it if Apple said so.
2. "Dood," I tested the MTNL 3G sims - three of the converted micro-sims did not work (the conversion process is erratic), although two did. And you will have to jailbreak the iPad to make it work with a non-supported provider such as MTNL . Yes, the experience is "ossum" but bang goes your warranty the moment you jailbreak the device.
3. I do not get your point. Yes, you do more on it than you do on your BlackBerry. Good for you. Would my saying that I do more on a 15k netbook than a 30k BlackBerry make any sense?
4. I am a huge Apple fan, but would just like you to remember that Apple does not always release all products in all markets. The first iPhone was never released in India. It is not a matter of "betraying customer base," but simple corporate policy.

The intention of the piece was not to impress you at all, bu

I am sorry if I appeared insulting, but the one-eyed view really miffed me. I know atleast 5 frnds of mine who are using the iPad and they are happy with it - so it wud hv made sense to me if you decided to be a trifle more objective in your article. What miffs me is a big publication like Rediff publishing it, you are obviously entitled to your views. Now, for a few answers:

1. The iPad warranty is international - plz search the forums. So, for any iPad bought in any country, you will get customer service support in any country which supports the product - and yes, Apple says so.
2. I have no view on why your sims did not work - I and a frnd of mine were successfully able to convert it in the 1st go and I type this comment from my 3G iPad :). Also, we hvn't jailbroken our iPad - especially my frnd is a dedicated anti-piracy supporter, but I can't ask you to trust me - seeing is believing, right :) ?
3. My point was that instead of getting a 30k smartphone for being "smart", it definitely makes sense to use a low-cost phone (smart as well :)) and instead buy an iPad at 30k - definitely makes sense and when did netbooks go smart :) ?
4. I am not talking of an India release, I am talking of an International release. I hate Apple for being so US-centric, but if you can buy the iPad internationally right now, there is no fear of going obsolete for atleast a yr !

Heh, you wrote this article 4 public consumption - so I can definitely comment on

It is a highly hyped and overrated Gadget. It maybe useful for some people in certain scenarios however there are other tablets which can do much more and netbooks have their own significant advantages as well. it is Not unique in most ways unlike iPhone which even now has one of the best web browser and touch screen.

Dude, since when were Gizmodo & Endgadget unbiased? They behave like Apple's marketing department. And, no, you got it wrong about Apple devices rarely going wrong. The good thing is Apple's service is usually so good that even pissed off customers return happy, with some freebie or a replaced device even when out of warranty, etc. You lose all that when you get this thing to India, which is what the article pointed out. You are obviously an Apple fanboy & any amount of rational article will not satisfy you till it's full of praise for Apple. So, just chill enjoy your iDevices.

If you wait now, you will wait forever
by mandeep Bhangu on Jul 01, 2010 07:08 PM  | Hide replies

Apple products have been known for havning newer versions after every few months, if you are waiting for a newer version then you will always keep on waiting.. plus you wont be able to experience the gadget until that wait.. If i was told that i should wait for a better car till next 6 months, there is always a better car coming in next 6 months.. i would never own one and would be deprive of benefits of a car.. same goes for the ipad or any other gadget.. buy it as soon as it gets released .. just my 2 pence..

Not really - it can charge off a USB but you cannot plug a USB device like a thumb drive or printer into it. But its integration with the cloud is excellent.
