Manager or waiter?
by thomas johnson on Jan 19, 2010 10:11 AM  | Hide replies

I am surprised by the comment by Mr. Jay Rathore, General Manager, Oberoi Hotel that whether a new Mangement Graduate can handle 25 persons? He is absolutely right in the context of Indian culture which is applicable only for employees where young lads of business houses come and sit in the chair of Director and all the top management brass listen to him and they will become more succesful like Mukesh and Anil Ambani. Dear Rathore, please remember India had a Prime Minister who had Zero participation in politics and by virtue of his mother's assasination and he bacame our most dynamic Pm we ever had? So please cange your mind and give right candidate the right chance and certainly he/she will prove.

India is cursed to have PM's who have no experience. Rajiv did SriLanka fiesco, led India to foreign currency crisis -- 1n 1991 India was on the verge of being bankrupt --, Bofors scandel happened in his tenure.

On the messecre of sikhs it was him wo said before press 'when big trees fall, earth is bound to shake'. Dynamic... my foot.

You are right i have seen Front office Trainees working as door man in 5 star hotels....why do they need to pay 4-5 lakhs n study to do a job like that..with good communication n presentation skills you can work in a call centre and earn easily 15-20k without embarassment...imagine working as a door-man if you find any family friends or relatives seeing u wat kind of embarassment u go through

Dude, I dont think you get it. That industry is like that. I am a hotelier and so is my wife. Let me give you an example - a real life situation. My wife was once employed with one of the largest chain of hotels in India. She was working for one of their hotels in Chennai. A guest had completed his check in formalities and was waiting to be shown to his room. However at that moment, there were no bell boys to carry his luggage. At that moment a person who was standing near the front desk offered to help the guest by carrying the guest's luggage. As he did that and proceeded to wards the elevator the Front office manager and the GM who happened to see this, rushed towards the man who had offered help. That was when my wife realised that the person who actually carried the luggages was none other than the son of the owner of that particular hotel chain!!!! who is surely a millionaire. And the most important thing here to be noted is that, the guest did not even know who that person was!!!!

So why do you think this is an embarassing job, just think of it as "rolling up your sleeves and doing a fellow human's job"

You are talking about call centers!!! Can I give you an example of an embarassing situation in a call center. This is again with a leading UK banking BPO in chennai. A customer had apparently insulted my friend who was very unfortunate to have received his call. The customer told him that he did not want to speak to any "brown skined bloody Indian"
