The writer of this article is not in tune with the latest management papers and has completely ignored the second stage of evaluation.

These days papers ask lesser number of questions and cut off as a score are higher.

I agree that these tests might not be the best available tool to assess a candidate, however given the sheer number of aspirants, we can not do a 5 day SSB kind of model.

Controversial issue

yes, its true that management is not like other disciplines where just analytical skills would help. You need candidates being creative and innovative...which is out of the bookish knowledge....management is a mind game...But the problem is that, no one can say that qualified candidates from IIT JEE/CAT/MAT/XAT/GMAT are devoid of such management traits...So, what is the best alternative solution ?...the question is whether creativity or competition is the crux of management education in India.

There is no single way, no examination by which one can measure creativity between two individuals. Creativity of an artist could be mystery to a sporstman or a banker. A trend is emerging nowdays to look down upon the 'examination' system and question if we are producing the right kind of engineers, mgmt graduates, scientists etc. JEE/CAT and quite a few other exams are reputed because they challenge one's mind in a very creative fashion, they do not go by bookish knowledge only. Not to say that all entrance exams are perfect, there is definitely a need to make them broad-based and be a real test of aspects other than academics.

The problem is less with the 'entrance mechanism' and more to do with what is taught in our institutes and how is it taught after the candidates get in. Why the US, Europe have prospered is inherently because of the way education is imparted there in schools, universities and even workplace. Students are encouraged to let flow their thoughts, experiment, make mistakes - but strive for perfection, excel in what you do...Be the very best. While our India system focuses on scoring the highest marks (GPA, Rank, %age etc etc). It is very important to be competitive and India's examination system is a big contributor to country's overall fame and success. It is like the input fuel is right but the transmission and output needs some 'Fine-Tuning'.

IIPM - fraudulent
by sreejit steve on Feb 15, 2010 05:25 PM

IIPM is known across MBA aspirant crowd and coaching industry experts as a shady and below-par business school, which comes to occupy mindspace only because of the money it spends on ads in newspapers and magazines.
IIPM has, in fact been often accused of blatant lying when it comes to placement figures(Refer Career 360 story on 'IIPM fraud'). Students should use their common sense- How can an institute without a proper merit based test have the kind of quality they talk about?..Forget IIM, IIPM doesnt even stand in top 30 of most believable B-school surveys. The well-known Pagalguy forum has banned the use of the word "IIPM" in its site. Most coaching institutes advise against joining it. All in all, IIPM is a trap students should avoid trapping into. At least so one thing before joining IIPM, PERSONALLY ASK THE STUDENTS OF IIPM ABOUT IIPM..not on websites or mba forums..

Their self-styled "management guru" Arindam Chaudhary is sells low-brow books, often containing business buzzwords, to fool people into thinking they r intellectual and ground-breaking.

How can you even think of IIPM in this list? This shows how much ignorant you are. How can you even compare a Indian school football team with Brazil football team?

Do you think only people who score more than 50% should have a career ? Tell that to Tendulkar, Dhirubhai Ambani, Gulshan Kumar, Bill Gates etc. What career counseling do you do ?

Mr Kashyap is not talking about not having career for 50%. He is talking about admission to MBA college where the percentage is important to set a bench mark. You talk about Tendulkar - then hear it that his percentage is not important in what he does. You talk about Ambani - he runned business on his own and his percentage was not necessary for his business genius. But obviously you won't understand this logic since u seem to be a product of IIPM

Admission Tests
by SV on Feb 15, 2010 05:13 PM  | Hide replies

I guess these tests do a sufficient job of getting high 'aptitude' applicants out from the rest of the crowd...If the aptitude is right, you can probably learn lot of practical things...
I would still say this is the right approach to get selected to MBA , where you are going to gain managerial aptitude and learn the nuances...If managerial aptitude is to be tested (which is not tested even for admissions in Ivy league), then only people with atleast 3 to 4 years of experience would get through...

Anyways, the admission test is not the final frontier, you still have GDs and PIs to clear...guess the tests are basically for mass rejections as it would be too tedious to interview or conduct GDs of millions of candidates...

ATTITUDE is more important then APTITUDE any day. These tests do not measure attitude & are only a means for coaching institutes to earn huge money. Many MBA graduates have opened money minting coaching institutes & lure gullible students.

Sir,
Please tell me how to measure attitude in a standardized manner?

And why do you think people with high aptitude would not have right attitude? Why would they slog their assess when they can go out there and have fun or do something relatively simpler?
