I believe that going by the average salary for the batch is very misleading as there are cases when a few exceptional offers can pull up the average figure. US b-schools report median salary figures which are a better assessing tool as students can know that by being in the top half of the batch they have a reasonable chance of getting the mentioned figure or more.

I feel the average salary as given most B-schools and suggested by you too is a little misleading. Why because a few students may get exceptional offers and thus pulling up the average figure for the batch. I think a fairer way to look at this is by providing median salary figure so that an aspirant can know that he/she is in the top half of the class he/she has realistic expectation of something more than the median figure
