It's a wonderful opportunity. My great grandson can have a good education now. What more can an Indian ask for?

what a joke !!

Both Oxford and Cambridge consistently rank amongst the top five universities in the world. Considering the fact that we do not have any in the top 100 as yet, having Indian universities competing with Oxbridge looks like a pipe dream.
Not that we should stop trying.... however, political and bureaucratic interference, lack of academic freedom, and a general lack of meritocracy are huge bottlenecks.

@again its ambani

Now Ambanis will be in Education sector soon

I just wonder with their so much wealth why can't they take initiatives like Birlas(BITS, PIlani) and Tatas(List will be endless)

If they can influence the govt for their products and change policies why can't they get serious in this.

I can give better reasons, Criticise India and prasie US/Eu on stage, but thats not the action we want from Mukesh bhai..

Do something for India

First get rid of cancerous reservation

Yeah big talks India will create universities with following
(a) OBc category have the option to qaulify for general and OBC category - so if he qulaifies better in general category he can make a choice and qualify there same for SC/ST students what is the consequence - a general seat is permanently eaten meaning a talent is shelved and lost.
(b) Eg- 3 IIT students of SC/ST category repeatedly falling for last 3 years dean asked them to go consequence - the Dean is summoned by SC/ST and then when put up a caseby these students the Chief justice gives a vedict keep them in IIT as long as they pass and give them special coaching.
So point comes what qulaity of engineering we will get in India 9 a bridge which is dangerous to travel and human doctor you visit you are not sure of cure.

Oxford and Cambridge

To build Oxford and Cambridge in 25 years is a Joke. Not just in India but even in US or UK. They had a rich tradition of about 8 centuries and had the one and only goal of spreading knowledge and education. Intellectualism blossomed there because it was never hampered by politics, reservations, extra government/bureaucratic influences and the like. Yes, India had comparable antique institutions like Nalanda and Takshila but in the present circumstances where students don't relish the pure passion of knowledge but study only to get a good paying job at the end, not just it is nearly impossible but also such institutes are not required. And if they really attempt to build such institutions, for God's sake there should not be professional courses like Engineering and Management. We have enough such technical institutions - whether they are up to the mark is a different question. It should be a place to study Arts and Humanities - more importantly it should be a place where ideas are born for the improvement and elevation of society and which help mankind.
(Btw, I don't have anything against engineering or management - I am an engineer and am going in for a management course. For people who suggest why I don't get into arts or humanities, let me confess that now I lost both the intellectual and creative spark and cannot really help anyone by working in those areas)

oxford & cambridge are no big deals really...the hotbed of socialists and anti establishment vermins who have let their countries be taken over by Islamic radicals...India has a better chance provided it doesnt produce useless intellectuals that pervade the Indian media now.

Status of Research Institutions/Universities in India
by rs rawat on Feb 03, 2010 04:30 PM  | Hide replies

If we want quality education and research in India, we have to look into the infrastructure available for research in that Institute. To make my point, in Uttarakhand there are scores of Institutions which donot qualify even recognition at all but are playing with the future of the students. These institutions either owned by the politicians/officials or by the petty shopkeepers/mafias. HRD Ministr is perfectly right to derecognise the status of many of these. Mr Sibal should offer Research Fellowships to dedicated researchers for Ph D to know the exact nature of Research Centers/Universities & NGO-to get the propr picture of the status of Higher Education in India. Till there is reservation in India, we cannot hope for the quality in Research & teaching at all. I am not against reservation to a certain level only. But for quality research work, we should throw this concept in the Indian Occean immediately. I donot think a better curse in the Indian Society than the reservation. Even the concept of paid seats-a form of reservation for rich should be abolihed- a mean of corruption & black money generation at the cost of Merit in India. BUT who will bell the cat on these issues? till then GOD SAVE INDIA. Donot beleve on the politicians of any party. They want to divide the society so that they/their kiths and kins can enjoy for years to come. It is a good dream on our part to improve quality of our Institutions to top class in the World but really we are prepared for that?.

UP has 2314 degree colleges; out of which only 121 are up to the mark, according to the NAC.
