Houseboats
by Tom Dick on Apr 22, 2010 08:12 PM  | Hide replies

I have enjoyed the house boat trips through Vembanad lake but my concern is the pollution these boats are making. The house boats are supposed to be converted rice transport boats called 'Kettuvallam' and it was pushed through the rivers of Kerala by Oarsmen using long barge poles. However, now, instead of using the poles to navigate the boats through the rivers, they are using diesel/kerosene engines and the result is the water is getting polluted. More than three thousand such boats in the lake can kill it in no time.

Even same thing is happening in Chilka Lake of Orissa. It is the largest naturla lake of India but Govt is hardly concerned !!

Tom Dick,

A poignant comment!

Looks to be an inconvenient truth, sadly no response to a real danger!
Still waiting for a resonse about any measures taken or as usual, we will wake up when we are neck-deep in trouble!
