I visited Rishikesh in 1970.Then itself, the place was more commercialised as compared to 1957 - as told to me by my grandfather who was an orthodox Brahmin. He told me that the place was becoming commercialsed day after day. My last visit was in 1998.I was shocked to see the utter disregard for Health and Hygene aspects. The place is full of junk and the Ganges is not clear anymore. With all negative conditions, there is no spirituality anymore, and awakening is required to realise nature there. As long as the heart and mind is pure,it doesnt matter if the streets and Ganges is not, spirituality comes from within, not from what is outside on the streets. If you are so worried about the commercialisation, pls ask all the western people to stop coming there to "FIND THEMSELVES"...
All above is a matter of tourism or interesting but do not lead anywhere to spirituality, which is ultimate object of a human being. In Hindu system, to know self(Atman) is equal to knowing HIM, this concept is missing.
