Is this an issue?
by PS on Nov 06, 2009 08:50 AM

The article says
"Last year over 246,000 students had applied for the test. This year the number has fallen to 241,000."
Which means that there are 5000 MBA aspirants less this time.
Does it makes any difference because though the aspirants are lessened, but still the course will continue. There is no impact on the course.Whatever seats in management institutes are to be filled will be ofcourse filled.
Only the competition is little bit reduced.
So why make it an issue?

Media hype unnecessary
by Guess Who on Nov 05, 2009 01:54 PM

Many a time, due to the media hype, a lot of good candidates shy away from taking the CAT thinking that they are not good enough to get in. This trend could have been amplified this year, given the negative media reports on MBA programs.

I beg to differ. Perhaps, people admitted to IIMs may not leave due to fees. But i know of so many examples with great GMAT scores , not even applying to ISB, due to the egregious fees there.

IIMs losing shine..
by Jas on Nov 05, 2009 10:56 AM  | Hide replies

ISB has several times more applications this year.

IIMs will continue to lose out because of Reservations and Quotas. And thats the way it should be.

Some of the top colleges in India, like the IITs and the IIMs, have a selection ration of about 1% to 2% of total applicants. Many of the seats for reserved category students of not get filled, because institutes do not get enough. So, blaming reservations on falling standards of IIMs is wrong. In any case, all of them are far ahead of the tier 2 institutes that a slight dip in quality would not make much of a difference. Despite the 30% fall in salaries last year, all IIMs had an average salary around 12L , not a mean achievement.

MBA v. CA
by AJAY GOEL on Nov 05, 2009 10:25 AM  | Hide replies

There cannot be any comparison between MBA and CA. There are a number of number of institutions giving MBA education with varying standards. For CA, there is only one INSTITUTE created by law, which monitors not only the CA education, but also the practice thereafter. The pay packages of MBA differ drastically and yet those getting low packets due to lack of knowledge and efficiency call themselves MBA. One needs good amount of money for doing MBA. MBA is the course for Convent educated english speaking wealthy students who are not aware of many ground realities, while CA is the course for a student who is not the son of a wealthy father, but has the lust of knowledge and the fire to achieve higher goals in the field of knowledge and profession. Before becoming a CA, one has not only to qualify the exams which are truly ACID-TESTS, but he has to undergo a practical training under a practising Chartered Accountant.
Any peon's student can become a proud CA, while it is very difficult for him to get admission in any IIM, due to money constraints only.
The CA's belong to a family. It is said that they are married to the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India, becuase they remain the members of the INSTITUTE throughout their life, while any such mandatory membership is not heard about MBA's.

IN FINANCE, TAXATION, ACCOUNTACY, CORPORATE LAWS, CA's HAVE NO COMPETITIORS.

Cant stop laughing.

You must be a a Tax Clerk, who is nothing more than a middle-man who benefits from complexities of the indian taxation laws.

the job definitaions of CA and MBA is entirely different. MBA aims to develop a person as manager and CA focusses on financial accounting and auditing only. I think they should not be compared. Have clear understanding before writing any bullshit. By the way, my father is an established CA and I am an MBA from one of the top 10 institutes in india. So I know both very well.

It looks more like you did not get seat even in tier 3 MBA college. Spend all your life doing addition subtraction.

I think at the end of the whether CA of M.B.A in the long run its how you perform in an organisation that makes the difference i have seen a lot of IIMs and CAs inspite of years of service stuck to middle level positions & people with no fancy degrees reaching places.

Any education is for money, food and fame
by Indian on Nov 05, 2009 10:07 AM  | Hide replies

Why doing MBA, when u can convert to muslim, christian and joining into SC and ST. Govt. will give u free food, bed, security, job and reserve a seat for ur kid. that is the dream life for any Indian. Why working hard and facing criticisms by being a OC Hindu rather than enjoying life as a minority lower class.

What nonsense are you talking? An SC/ST when he converts to christianity, loses his SC status overnight. Govt is actually encouraging SC/ST to remain in hindutva, by paying in terms of money and reservation. Please stop this crap and dont bring your dirty religious fanatism to issues that has nothing to do with religion.

Christians have a huge number of minority professional colleges, where they prefer their ilk.

Also, there is a proposal in AP Assembly several times to give SC ST OBC status to xians and muslims etc.

Drop in number of CAT applicants
by kaustubh saha on Nov 05, 2009 10:06 AM

In my opinion it is happening because :
1. People with not so great background who dont fancy joining IIMs or MDI are reluctant to sit for CAT because in current market scenario tier 2 institutes dont portray a very exciting placement scenario.

2. Some of the freshers passing out of premier engineering colleges who already have a job or two in hand, are thinking about doing an engineering job for an year or two and go for CAT when the market improves

3. 2009 hasnt been a very good year for working professionals. Many of them preferred to consolidate their positions in current job by pitching in extra hours and hence had little time to prepare for CAT. A lot of them might not be sitting for CAT because they are not well prepared this year
