Pl be sensitive to their feelings. I have seen Indians calling the local aobrginies 'niggers' and the white ausies 'convicts'. This is very offensive, although we dont appreciate the gravity/seriousness of these terms. Remember we have gone to an alien country for our requirement and it is better to respect their culture and laws and try to be aloof from trouble makers. By indulging in bravado will be only asking for trouble. I lived in Perth for 2 years from 1995 to 97 and never had any problem. On the other hand I had more problems with the Indians who were there.

Mate.. I live in australia and its not about calling niggers and convicts.. They call Indians or chinese WOGS. wat abt that. We dont go on and attack them.
Also you go to a foreign country not to be slave but lice a free life... Stop blaming Indians for everything.
1. Avoid eye contact with people who are hanging out in a group- [MEANING walk with your head down,since you are the lowly life in Australia] 2. Don't get curious about things and start asking questions to strangers[MEANING keep your mouth shut and open only if an Australian asks you to open it, otherwise you would be labelled uncivilized] 3. Don't stare at women.[MEANING:let the Australian goons assult your women, and get away with it too] 4. Don't retort back if some one is pulling your leg just smile and shrug it off.[MEANING: learn to take insults laughingly, after all you are an Indian] 5. Avoid noisy parties in your house[MEANING: Don't live your life or have fun, atleast not without the permission of all your Australian neighbours] 6. Avoid staying in cheap rental neighbourhoods. If possible, opt for a smaller flat in a higher paying rental accommodation.[MEANING: Be rich or don't go to Australia] 7. Don't get argumentative with strangers about which cricket team or player is better[MEANING: Don't rub it in that we are the best in cricket world today, after all it will be highly uncivilized to speak the obvious and show the great Australian cricket team what they truly are]

@Alok Anandd I completely agree with u.I think that these people who r telling these r shameless slave like creature who have no sense of self respect or dignity.Actually whole world thinks that we r followers of Gandhiji so we will follow the non-violent path & will never retaliate.Have u ever heard a chinese student getting beaten up anywhere?Its bcs they also retaliate when they r attacked but these spineless cowards dont have the guts to live a life of dignity.THEY DON'T DESERVE TO BE CALLED AS HUMAN BEING,THEY R THE PET DOGS OF THE AUSSIES

I agree with all the people that are of the opinion to give it back when offended/ insulted. But I would also like to state that beware of the place and circumstances. It is not worth getting beaten up in a goforsaken place and ending up in the hospital. Nor is it worth facing some goons who are high on drugs and would not even reason with what truth and facts you are trying to defend.
First and Foremost Try to Integrate with the local Community ! They are not bloody Martians and your culture is not the only culture in the World and worst of all you are in their country and not Vice Versa and hence some integration with the mainstream would nicely do!
Do not force your culturaland religious views on them , dress dapper, change your shirts often , show some civic sense and personal hygiene and not pick your bloody nose in public and spit !
Do not speak loud in your respective languages like a wandering Gypsies and have some dignified presence.

You are right.But just as Indians need to be aware of the Australian culture, the Australians too need to be aware of our sentivities.It cannot be a on-way street.I am sure that is not too much to ask in return for all the dollars they are earning from the Indian market.

If you follow the thread completely, you will get to know the reason yourself. No external threat is needed to rough you up. Indians have a tendency to fight among themselves. People here in thread are fighting among themselves on frivolous issues and for incompetent politicians. We have no unity. We really like to be treated as dogs and that's why we are being treated that way.
