RETRENCHMENT - THE INDIAN SCENERIO v/s US
by bhaskar guha on May 19, 2009 11:20 AM

A well managed company is the one that takes stock of its activities , employees, policies when struck by recession ... Its the trying time for all in the organisation...Its like a crisis situation in a family...a well knit family faces the crisis by making a combined effort to survive & wave off the bad times the bonding between the members become yet stronger....This situation is interim to India , where human values are deep rooted even today, despite donning the neuclear family fabric... which does not exist in the western world ...where family bondings are very weak so the hire & fire formulae there & here bear a strong perspective in the two different situations...we in India are used to the British system which is consciious of social responsibility of the emplyer-employee...& we are now changing to the unscrupulous American system very fast & adapting their employment ,to suit our convenience...things that r true in the US are not suitable to the indian scenerio where unlike the US, most families in India ,still have a single bread earner in the family & the entire earnings of the parent had gone into educating this bread-earner with the hope of a better tomorrow... Bad times are never there forever ... but panic causes the problem with companies that lack vision & foresight... their employees are their assets...not liabilities...of course , this could be a good time to weed out the poor performers...Problem in most of the companies lie in correct assessment

Here is a similar situation. Trusting your instincts will always help you in making a right decision. However, its the right time to rethink on your career strategy. Do you have dreams of doing big?? If so then try to materialize it.If you are really a hardworker and meticulous planner then layoff is not going to bother you anymore.

Think of a business which is economically viable and there is growing demand.
Think of the skill upgrade which would make you HOT in job market.
Search for innovative avenues.
If you have age < 30 Yrs. You should apply for civil services and government services along with your continued plans.

No job is small as long as you have self esteem attached to it. Friends its the time to give back harder and become tough with yourself. In future, such situations bound to come again and you are the toughest person around. what do u say???

Its not end of the story...
by Guru Dandamis on May 19, 2009 10:45 AM  | Hide replies

Guys,

Layoffs are nothing but a weapon in the capitalist armory to show who is the boss when the time comes.

You would have seen good employees being laid-off and bad ones retained. So its not your talent or performance that matters. When the time comes, you got to go. That simple it is.

I had one guy in my team who is always scared about getting laid off. He was close to my boss and was a spy as well. He gets to know the heartbeat of my colleagues and informs to the boss. I used to get pissed off with him, until one day I told him that I dont care and give a damn to you. After that, I told him what all I can do after getting laid off, for which I already had all plans in place. He was shocked and I told him, go tell boss that he (thats me) is not bothered a bit and he would be most willing to give his head if he can save any other team mate. After that speech, there was a marked change in the way my boss looked at me. I am sure I will not be in the layoff list until the last as he saw true guts and fighting spirit in me which he will not get with others who are scared and serventile in attitude.

So my friends, dont even care about such articles in rediff and enjoy a break if you get laid off. Then get a better job and start life all over again. Never give a damn.

I am also taking tuitions after I was fired
by SURESH S on May 14, 2009 12:52 AM  | Hide replies

I am a mech.engr from Trichy.I joined as a Q.C asst in an industry in Viralimalai. We used to work non-stop for days together- all this was fifteen or sixteen years ago. My pay grew from Rs 700 in 1991 to around Rs 7000 by 2002. I worked in the shopfloor. You know, a shop-floor work is totally different from a IT industry. In the late 90s, this " performance appraisal" trend set-in. When one of our first colleagues was axed, we were shocked. One by one, heads started rolling. One day when I was in second shift, my boss called me to his room. It was six thirty in the evening. He said to me,"Your name is in THAT list. You can go home now by the six-forty five bus. Come by general shift tomorrow.". I somehow put on a brave face and came home. The next day I went by the 8.00 bus. The VP called me and made me sign a typed resignation letter saying "some people breakdown during such situations, so we have saved the trouble of writing such a letter. So just sign. You need not come from tomorrow onwards". No parties, no farewells. The emotional detachment was shocking. Now I am taking tuitions for college students aspiring for campus interviews. Though I am making less money, I am earning more goodwill from my students. I booked my first motorcycle, a humble TVS star city two days ago. I could not do this even when I was working.
S.Suresh,
Trichy.

Sorry for the late reply . I forgot to set email alert.
Well , I do not want to get into a controversy by answering your query. But, I can say the company that I worked in is now the largest industrial complex there in Viralimalai. What happened in the preceding year before I was fired was the most misleading. I was put in charge of the places where something was bad and needed to be sorted out. I did show some improvements as well . I was led to believe that I was indispensable to the company when I was suddenly pushed out.
So even though you might be loyal to your employers, have a contingency plan as well.
Anyway, thank you for your reply.
By God's Grace,
S.Suresh,
Trichy

I do not consider myself even worthy of mention. I think it is all God's grace. I am a very ordinary person. Till ten days ago I still roamed around town in a bicycle. In addition to taking tuitions, I am also helping some poor girl children pursue a college education here in Trichy with help from some good people and my own earnings.

Capitalism collapsed in the USA...its going the same way in India very very soon. Do not depend on these large profit driven greedy corporations, start something of your own and get paid for what your hard work directly.

All these greedy corporates will crumble into pieces and each piece will be a small business like that of Suresh. You will make just about enough to run your family minus the rat race minus the stress.

well, If it is a foreign country, they will more cruel and cold than our Indian counterparts !! All they would say is
" Clean up your desk tomorrow" in a polite way.

India is not a communist country, mind you. Hire and fire is important if the company is not doing well. This is only the beginning. Expect more labor reforms even in Government sectors. Private sector, doesn't have to answer any government. They set their own rules.
