by ss sk on Jun 24, 2009 12:43 PM  | Hide replies

Shameemji excellent article and Thank you very much for clearing my doubt which i carried for so long and that too without asking.
Recently I started Pranayama (after looking at Ramdevbaba)i have done 3 sets of Kapalbhati but by afternoon i was unable to breath deeply and felt lot of uncomfortable in Chest. My daily morning sequence of Asanas is as under :
1) Warm-up legs & Arms 2)Veerasana 3) Vajrasana 4) Gomukhasana 5) pavanamuktasana 6) Bhujangasana 7) Sarvangasana 8) Halasana 9) Vipareetkarini and Savasana.
Pl. suggest any proper sequence or the above sequence is right. Kindly suggest any changes.. I have stopped Pranayama now..

that would be a tough question to answer since there are, according to yoga texts, 84 lakh poses:) And for some lotus is tough, but of course easy for others. So it is a matter of personal body type, practice intensity etc. Nothing is difficult and any pose responds to daily practice. But of course not all of us are capable of such dedication.
About your earlier question/s you can improve breath capacity by doing belly breathing. See my earlier articles, on meditation poses, for this.
And the sequence is ok since it has simple asanas. Ideally, inversions should should be up front in your practice-- Inversions mean, sarvangasana, halasana and viparitakarini need to be done immediately after warm-up.
best

Hi I am a yoga student and I also had similar problems. The issue is first you should increase your lung capacity. You can do it by practicing correct breathing technique. First start by inhaling observing your stomach becomming bigger. When that reaches it's limit then observe chest expanding and when that reaches limit observe your shuolder moving up and backwards filling the upper parts of the lungs. And then exhale in the same order stomach, chest and then shoulders. Do it very slowly and do not exhert too much pressure on your lungs. Even while doing pranayama, do not push yourself to the limit and exhert too much. Suppose you can inhale for 5 seconds , while doing pranayama limit your inhalation to 3 secs. Hope this helps. Best thing to do would be go to teacher and learn.
