Natural Employability
by pournima shahane on Jun 20, 2009 12:58 PM

Regional/lingual Nepotism, gender bias, your lineage, your willingness to nod in affirmation to seniors/leaders,working as directed and sheding onus for the mistakes/initiatives,scoring on borrowed credits, manipulating situations - thats what makes you best employable.Very common case where people with less specific qualification/experiences are recruited due to recommendations from a decision influence, while a better/ deserving candidate is ignored or kept on hold.

Basic values!
by shiva on Jun 17, 2009 06:32 AM  | Hide replies

We have to find our own space in the working world. Those who are at peace with themselves are the blessed! There are those who work for others but are contented in life. Then the others, who are entrepreneurial to have their own outfits but still manage to find time for families.

Work is only a means to an end! The end should be conrtribution to family & society. The advent of computers have meant work can be twenty four hours. It is upto us to switch off! I have seen the richest able to relax even when running huge businesses employing thousands. There are also others having a miserable stressful life just eking out a living, for no apparent reason.

As work is only a means to an end of a happy family life, we should find contentment in simple life. The best way seems to be live for the moment! Apply oneself whatever is at hand completely. As for myself, I do office work in the office & switch off when leaving it! After all there should be a life beyond working life!

We should just live for our ourselves & family. Our conscience should be the master. Most tend to live for others. Finally, the maxim holds the higher you rise, the harder you fall. So we all have to find our own levels that we are comfortable with.

We should take a deep breath & reflect as often as possible! Life is transcient! We are from nature, leave everything & disappear into thin air, sooner than we think!

Most employees abroad especially here in the UK value their time off or family time. It is as important as the time put in work. Most people in Big internationally reputed companies leave sharp at 5:30 Pm. If you call them after 5:30 Pm to discuss work, you will be showered with the choicest of abuses. It is only in India people stay for so long in the office. How many of those people seriously work? Most would be chatting away or in twitter or Face book.

Please do not jump to conclusions!

I have worked in many countries. Yes, in govt companies but I had enough of it within a couple of years. Then, high-tension private ones!

FYI, I knew one of the richest in the world before he became very rich indeed, but he is as committed to family & his staff as he was twenty five years back!

hmmm, I wonder what would have happened to the world if einstein, edison or newton thought like you....

According to you they were loosers who gave work; primacy over everything else.

If you are a doctor can you afford to let a person die just because you have your daughter's birthday party to attend.

What nonsense. Work can be your whole life if you want it to be. It needs to be a personal choice. What is needed is a balance. Everyone is perfectly ok if someone wants to live only in and for the office. But that should be a personal choice. Management of companies should not force people to work till 12:00 in the night using the recession as a pretext to carry the stick. What should be honestly assessed is the actual productivity to the company due to employees staying late. More often than not an employee staying late is just a waste of his time and waste of electricity and utilities for the company than any real productivity. It is stupid to equate staying late with productivity.

Just because your miniscule brain fails to comprehend the concept of dedication to a profession doesn't mean it is nonsense.

Your equation of "office = work" sums up your whole attitude, and possibly why you will go through life just bad mouthing management. Office is a place. your profession is what you do, what defines who you are that is independent of office, it is something you can be doing r thinking abt even if you are driving or having dinner, equating physical presence in office to work defines 95% of the world population, who crib about the other 5%. To whom Work is just a way to make ends meet and put food on the table.

I never said that staying late is equivalent to productivity.

My Opinion
by mohinder pandey on Jun 16, 2009 06:04 PM

Good Article! Well successfully applying the learned stuff to make something constructive I term as skill. Most of us fail to understand where our skill lies in the Product Chain. Future in my opinion does belong to those who have imagination about end to end Solutions of a product. They may not have all the required skills but do know what skills are needed to achieve results and most important they are able to channelise the energies of others to achieve a common Goal. I guess we all need to aspire to be People who move stuff from Point A to B practically by applying the skills rather than being blabbering theoreticers.

Office politics is the issue...
by Krishna on Jun 16, 2009 03:42 PM  | Hide replies

Employability factor is okay. Agreed. But how to deal with the politics in the Indian office environment. Why do people here like to take credit for other people's work? Why do people here like to talk negative about others? Why do managements want people to desperately outdo each other without looking at their individual strengths?

Politics within a company office is a acommon problem...It is not only in india...I have worked in 5-6 countries but could not see any difference...the only dirrence we could observe is the way we handle the political scenario.

I am agreed with Krishna. You are following your way but if someone (In India, chances to meet such personal in your life is very high)wanna kick you out just because of your success is the cause then what you will do. Everything is fine, only issue is our attitude. If Indians can change their attitude then they can do better than what they are doing now.
