I think that after reading books like George Bernard Shaw's "Arms and the Man" and Ernest Hemingway's "For Whom the Bell Tolls", or after reading poems like Wilfred Owen's "Anthem for the Doomed Youth" and Edward Thomas's "The Owl", nobody would nurture good ideas about a career in the armed forces!

everyone has a right to speak own mind...let me tell you joining armed forces is a 'JUNOON' a passion which most of the people wont understand including some of the people who are commenting like no reward etc etc ....when we join armed forces ...we are proud men ...and we remain so unmindful of discomfort , economic hardship ,physical etc etc . WE DONT MIND LAYING OUR LIFE FOR COUNTRY AND COUNTRYMEN , WE ARE FEW PROUD MEN AND WOMEN WHO WOSE COFFINS WOULD BE COVERED WITH OUR TRICOLOUR . WELL THERE IS NO DEBATE ON THIS ..WE LOVE IT AND CONTINUE TO DO SO ...............WE LOVE OUR COUNTRY AND COUNTRYMEN AND THATS ALL ..

Also remember! Don't join the armed forces with just the courage to lay down your life. Join the armed forces with the vigour and determination to annihilate the enemy. No war is won by just laying down lives, its won by destroying the enemy.

I hope there will not be any further discussion on this topic. Atleast guys if u dont want to join the Indian Army then u hav no right to discourage others by ur discouraging statement. I salute those who want to join Indian Army.
That is every individual aged between 15 - 40 has to register for selective service. Selective Service means, at the time of country crisis, all these registered individuals have to be available for Military service no matter what. In failure of doing so would result in Monetary penalty or even Imprisonment.

Joining defence is matter of pride.....if.. They behave decipline.. sometime they take undue advantage of their service... If anyone have came to know that one defence person from army tried to attempt rape on foreign lady in Railway, something 10th June .... Yah... you can say its happened for once ....Now its a matter of shame on India Defence force because of one person... but can you forgive if such thing happening with your relative/friends

Joining Indian Army, Navy or Airforce should be a matter of pride and nothing to do with money..... Army people had the most difficult life as they live in such harsh conditions where living is not even possible... Airforce is a way of life.... Joining the Indian Air Force and flying the Sukhois and Jets is every young man's dream.... But there has to be very tough physical strength as in case he crossed the border accidently and got arrested he should stand tough to withstand torcher and not reveal any information about the Indian Army or Air Force.... Besides there is a danger to life always present.... a will to sacrifice for the country..... which is lacking in many people in the country.... People joining Indian Army or Air Force for permanent jobs can never do well.... Its not a 9 to 5 IT or Office Job.... Its a job about passion, dedication, danger and will to give life for country....
Hope people joining Armed Forces have that compassion towards defending our country....

See my friends plz dont get into that becoz of money you should not join army no country pay million dollar to its soldiers. And taking the risk of life for so much money let me tell you every soldier in this world risks his life at the moment he joins army so joining indian army is no different. Second thing its a matter of pride to join army and serve this country. If u r scared of loosing your life or scared abt money then dont join indian army but please dont laugh or criticize those who r joining.

Jatinder, why are u trying to giv excuses. Im fm the elite force of the nation. Only true INDIANS would have second thoughts of joining the forces. As far as death is concerned, Iam driving in my car, or having a walk on the road, or simply at home doing nothing and the trajedy strikes, Im no more ;AN INSIGNIFICANT transition to nowehere. In forces, depending on the gravity of the event I would have been given the appropriate honour, along with various financial and may be employment benifits to my family. These are some of the small little thing only the forces can give; not eventhe other govt services.
Though the journey is tough but one should try for an INDIAN ARMY provided if he or she has got a good physique and the passion to do something for the country.

Physique has almost nothing to do with joining.The trg sorts that out.yes,passion is what counts and yes,soldiers deserve much more than what they r given.If people dont want to do this then they can join any force and protect their miserable turf in any way they can! and there is no doubt in my mind as to what will b'come of those wimps!! It is frightening to see armed forces being advertised like a spurious product. Boys and girls remember you have to spend the best part of your life in the most miserable conditions and in a most unrewarding manner if you join the armed forces. Only saints with a kink in their psychology should opt for it. 95 percent of the soldiers retire at 35 years of age with peanuts for pension and if you are lucky threafter you can be a security guard in a residential colony in Mumbai or Delhi. Of course there could be exceptions.

Dear Ravindran
You and I owe our lives to very such boys and girls that you have mentioned - the ones that given up their best part of their lives living in far of places under extremely tough conditions and with the company of guns.
Yes only saints need to go to such professions because all the crooks go elsewhere (probably?!).
I cant forget Major Unnikrishnan(taj seige) or Major Pandey (Kargil) and many others who walk in where an average person like me can possibly not even dare be seen. Hats off to them.
A soldier is not there only because of pay or it is his job. He/she also thinks what he/she owes to the land of his/her forefathers.
Better to face bullets and know what my fear is rather than live life of safety and live only for oneself.
But strange that article does not mention Territorial Army which is a good way for people above 27 to enter the services and get trained and come back to civil life later.

If they don't fight for peanuts at the border, you would have become either Pak's or China's doughnut.It's peanuts because we ppl vote such filthy and greedy rougues to power considering caste, religion, region, etc without considering their credibility. A huge chunck of our educated population donm't even cast their votes. How do you expect something better than peanuts for those in forces if their share of almonds is eaten by the filthy swines we elected?
