its the students efforts definitely not pretending to be competing with likes of Ferrari ,BMW, McLarens, williams, all the parts sourced by begg borrow computational models and scavenging parts... the parts like Independent Front Suspension look out right garage material. i really pity the students when i met them at the motor show in BKC mumbai and it was like the trustee was stingy to the core to even shell out a few tens of lac for the project , what they are assured is a roof over the head thats all, it is a shame!!
A 'Formula' in racing parlance means 'Set of rules and regulations'. These rules cover all aspect of racing including technical, commercial, on-track and off-track senarios.
'Formula 1' is one such set of regulations.
The students have done and excellent job. But it is Rediff that has given it a wrong heading.
A 'Formula' car is not necessarily a 'Formula 1' car.
this is what india stand. when western countries achieved best in all fields on technology at early 80 and 90, we indian, on 21th century can't duplicate similar things, still make third grade products and proud of it. Tell you indian is long long away to go for innovation. India education system and people good for just repetitive work. some comparison:
- there is not a single city in india are as good as early US cities in 80. i mean.. Indian cities are worser than most of US cities in 80 - even on 2009, india still take 10 years to built small bridge with poor qualities.

Ofcourse it has a long way to go ... anyway thanks for pointing out!!! पूरे निराशावादी हो .. अमावास की रात पिताजी ने प्रोडक्शन किया था क्या तुम्हारा ?

Comparing India to US might not be right. AMerican advance and developement took a different turn altogether. We have problems of our own which US didnt have to see.
For the technology, I guess initiatives such as these are definitely appreciated. We cannot run before we can walk. The good side of what we see here is there are marked and see'able improvements.
I wish the participants all the best and yeah... we are proud of you.

Yeah India is far away from US, but before pointing out you should try to figure out the possible causes US got its independence on July 4, 1776 where as India got independence in 1947. So what i mean to say is, it takes time to move ahead, and when we have people like you, then it takes little more time.

Hello Dude, You might already know, ISRO has done a sucessful experiment with few scientists "The Chandrayan Project" which NASA couldnt make out with plenty of resources.
also compare the success rates of these two, you will know where India is...
First of all, that dancing at the end was totally meaningless and irritating. Second, is that F1 car?..do they know actual meaning of F1? i mean they can name that advanced Go-carting car or etc. , but F1? If someone can create F1 car in their garage, then why all F1 car companies are spending millions on engineers and Cars, they can give contract to any group of 4-5 students in India. I am Indian and die hard fan of F1, i know how difficult to keep F1 car in a shape, one average car of F1 costs around few $$million, just a nose of F1 car costs around $20k and stearing panel costs $10k. Plus other parts, change of tyres per lap. F1 car is just not speeds, and this car is not even have speed, and what about balancing, This is utter nonsence and truely heart breaking to see that my fellow Indians are busy in wasting time.

I request you to please read before commenting ... it clearly says "Formula Student Germany International Design Competition" where they have sent their prototype .... No university will give millions of dollars to create a F1 car ... Its pretty logical isn't it? पूरे निराशावादी हो .. अमावास की रात पिताजी ने प्रोडक्शन किया था क्या तुम्हारा ?
Who wrote this article? Does he even know what is F1? This is a sports car which would participate in Formula Student. How does that make it Formula One?

No need to be abusive. The comments of Chivas are valid. There are loads of Engineering Colleges in India building "formula cars". They should properly be called "go karts" since they resemble the models used for amusement parks.
This is neither a Formula one car nor a prototype. THIS IS A FORMULA STUDENT RACE CAR. The car is made by the team Orion Racing India of KJ Somaiya college of engineering. It is made to participate in Formula Student Competition help all over the world at different times of the year. The team participates in Formula Student Germany every year in the month of august. All the car specifications are according to the rule of the Formula Student Competition. I am one of the team members and you can ask me about any further details. Hope this cleared all doubts.

Yes but that doesent explain the healine does it :)
Its not your fault. Rediff needs to do these things from time to time to get hits :P
It is, however, extremely annoying for the reader to find a mismatch between the headline and the article itself.
