Microfinance
by ramesh raman on Dec 03, 2009 07:46 AM

Players including Mr. Mohammed Yunus have entered into this field because it is highly lucrative. Since they are targeting women groups recovery by peer pressure is very easy. The interest they charge is no less outrageous than private money lenders. Many of its Indian counterparts charge anywhere around 37-40% if you calculate on a diminishing scale. Yet, due to media attention and conscious manipulation of facts the micro finance people are given a positive image. Whereas Regional Rural Banks and Cooperative Banks in India are doing a better job, but their work does not attract the kind of attention they deserve due to many reasons... and mainly due to the prejudice of the new generation and the media against Govt funding and public sector.
