what a ridiculous research!
by Anirban Dasgupta on Aug 25, 2009 03:10 PM  | Hide replies

this report in itself seems to comic, forgive me for being racist, but im not surpised its come from a german brain.. the problem with these researches is the ridiculously small sample sizes; all these people do is interview 50 - 100 people and then think they can project the trends on to the entire world with that...studies have already established that people with a better sense of humour and the ability to draw humour on oneself are more emotionally mature people who dont have hangups about what others think of them...people who laugh more and make others laugh are better people to work with and display lower signs of aggression and violence...somebody pls tell this babe to research on something else...

The problem is not with the report. It's merely presenting findings, which, incidentally, I happen to agree with as well. The problem is because of the fact that you are trying to make a value judgment out of it, when nothing of that sort was intended by the researcher.

The researcher has not propounded whether the aggression as manifest in humor is a good thing or a bad thing. Your objection is more or less predicated on the latter.

A difference can still be made between the two. Aggressive people, or more correctly, passive-aggressive people, are those who can't take a joke on themselves. Genuinely funny people make their own selves a butt of their jokes, as often as they make others. But some people can never take a joke on themselves, and that, I can assure, is not because of their gentleness.

That said, there is no joke possible which does not put someone down. If nobody is made a victim, the brain doesn't trigger the laughing circuitry!

Humor the best medicine? Not always
by cooldiffusion on Aug 25, 2009 02:41 PM  | Hide replies

If you use humor to belittle someone, put someone down it will always comes back to get you. And when it becomes a habit it will come back to haunt you. Since you constantly on the look out for people's oddities, weaknesses you become sensitive about your own frailities and are constantly on edge wondering if somebody made fun of you or if something was noticed. Also people who do this don't relax as their mind keeps going round and round instead of relaxing and accepting people with all their oddities. Laughter is good, humor is good but when used appropriately.

One time I made fun when somebody let out a frrrt! I announced it to whole room and kept on teasing this person for a long time till one day when I was at a high society sit down dinner and somebody cracked a really funny joke and I started laughing and frrting loudly at the same time with no control, each time I exerted to laugh a louder frrrt came out ... till i had series of frrts, something like a motor bike. My butt and I became the butt of all further jokes that night. And then I remembered the time I tortured this poor soul because he he frrted.

I think what matters is the intention with which the joke has been told. If it is told with the intention to show control, then yes, it is a sign of aggresion. if it is told with just to have a good laugh, then it is not. Both- the policemen and criminals use the guns. What matters is the intention.

Humour

Humour indeed is the spice of life. Everyone who has finished reading the article will find it as a "balanced" form of humour. As reserach done on humour it is ok, but then in today's world, people PAY for humour by joining the laughing club in the garb of "HEALTH" In conclusion, actual humour means, YOU LAUGH WITH SOMEBODY AND NOT AT SOMEBODY. Keep laughing.... folks....
