Does MBA are only targeted
by Ram Tangirala on Apr 29, 2009 03:52 PM  Permalink  | Hide replies

I read quite a number of layoff tales and learnt that most of them are MBA guys working as HRs. Is it like only MBA are targeted. I'm working as a sofware developer and planning to do my MBA. I'm worried abt the decision of doing MBA now.

I just want some suggestion upon this.

Thanks

Ram, be a better engineer. Aspire to become a software architect, and an ace engineer.

Don't ever think of MBA - just because you have seen some HR types acting busy, having snotty attitudes and wielding imagined power. That is shallow.

Being a great engineer, being a value real contributor is infinitely rewarding. If you do your MBA - being a great motivator & a business manager, an ethical rainmaker (i.e. a revenue getter), a highly articulate management consultant is something you must aspire to be. Forget MBA if you want to be a HR person, unless there is something deep inside you which motivates you for such a role, and where you can make a difference beyond the cosmetic layer.

name of the person sacked changed from Nisha Devdani to Puja
by deshbhakt on Apr 29, 2009 02:00 PM  Permalink  | Hide replies

The name was Nisha Devdani yesterday I think. Strange it has changed to Puja Kishani.

As a HR person, one is supposed to understand the organization's needs. During recession and to top up, with a full blown crisis; do you think there would be more recruitments?

And what do you mean by "Devil's Associate"? Being unpopular? As a HR person, you are supposed to understand organizational politics and not antogonize anyone. Remember HR is a support service and not the revenue rainmaker!

Good luck!

Is there any need to put the real name if the person is not interested.

What do you mean by "Understand organizational politics and not antogonize anyone"

Be a spineless, swaying-all-sides, direction-less one..HR will add value when take the middle ground and sort out issues..

If you take side of someone who is right, you will obviously antogonize the other person..

HR should play their role sincerely than be a yes man/woman..

HR people are supposed to have an employee friendly attitude. Not a snotty "delive's associate" attitude.

Unfortunately the IQ, talent and maturity levels we see in HR profession are generally absymally low.

Its good that Satyam has checked you out.
Satyam has proved that even in these times of trouble it is performance driven.

1. You have said that all your colleagues hated you. Means you are poor at people's management.
2. You said even your kid was tired enough of you and wanted you out of home for 8 hrs atleast.

To sum it up, you are not only poor at work but also poor at handling people.

My suggestion... Join some classes which improve your interpersonal skills.
try to do an MBA in HR management. If you already are an MBA,
may be you can do it a second time hoping that it will make you a better person.

recession for some turned good
by Ranjith on Apr 29, 2009 12:02 PM  Permalink  | Hide replies

I am in recruitment team in one of the IT majot, I have seen lot of these happening to my colleagues. Many went through a situation like yours, but after a period of time many got other jobs which has better prospets than recruitment.
For eg: one went to the core HR, few to training and developments, SAP HR and few even got govt. jobs.

So don loose hope is the moral of the story, there will be a light at the end of the tunnel of sure...

Thanks,
A fellow recruiter

remember the pain next time you throw resumes out
by Devdutt Nayak on Apr 29, 2009 11:58 AM  Permalink  | Hide replies

In your next job, HR boss, remember the pain you felt. Throwing people out is a routine acitvity for you HR people. Now you know how it feels when rejecting people. When not doing selection, rejection or final settlement, take care of your employees.

HR is not just the immigration office of the company.

A simple logic
by Shyam Sunder on Apr 29, 2009 11:31 AM  Permalink

If recruitments are not required anymore, the one who recruits has no work to do. So naturally the first one to face the axe in the situation is this guy / lady. Don't lose heart. There are good and bad times for everyone. And both good and bad times do not stay for ever. This would pass. Also be happy that now you have sometime to be with your dear child. Keep trying. God will not leave us in troubles. May God help you.

But all govt. employees are indispensable, one can divorce his wife but cannot get away with a govt. employee till he attains the age of 60.

if a private sector employee is laid off he will get another job in 3 months max. If a government employees is terminated for any reason, he will never get a job any where else. That risk they have to carry
