If you think AI is bad, you should fly CO. My two kids just had a harrowing experience from Mumbai to Austin via Newark on CO. From the point of taking over at Mumbai through to the transit at NEwark and connection to Austin, CO made their life miserable. AFter complaining all we got was a belated apology. By contrast AI treats minor passengers and elderly much much nicer and kinder. But yes i agree with you that AI is mostly always delayed. Waiting for Jet to start non stop USA flights, now even Kingfisher may start soon, that will be much better for all of us.
It's even worse for Gulf Sectors! I will blame 70% to Airline and 30% to our Indian Brothers. Drinks should be banned on Economy section and fare should be reduced by 2-3%. Business and First class can remain at least class pax will behave like gentleman with suit and boot! Air India should deploy foreign crew to increase the luxury level of services as we would be bound to feel embrassed for doing or asking weird things! One good thing that i will apperciate of AI is that Lunch and Dinner served is good but breakfast better to skip! I will bear the delays of flight which happens to every other Airline but treat the passengers nicely during the delays and givem them your moral comfort. By the way i have stopped flying on Air India for last 4 years.
Recently, The flight supposed to land at Mumbai instead landed at Goa ! The reson being both the flight piolets were dozing ! Thank god, finally God came to the rescue of passengers ! Times of India, Mumbai.

I would rather say Continental airlines is worst airlines I ever traveled. Air India is far better than some other carriers.

Fully agree especially for kids and elderly, AI is light years ahead of CO. CO is the worst airline, maybe AI is second worst?
I think the writer is clearly biased. While not condoning Air India, in the US recently a airline(i think it was JetBlue) made passengers sit in the plane for 6hrs on the Tarmac with no AC. Whil agree with the boorish behaviour of many Indian passengers, What betrays his bias is the statement about crying Kids. Come on man---you complain about kids crying!!

Most of us Indians can tolerate kids crying because we all have gone through it at some stage or the other with our own brood! Food wise AI is far superior to any US carrier, even attitude towards passengers AI is better than Americans. But its true that AI is always delayed and filthy aircrafts and toilets.

I totally agree with the nerve wracking experience and his decison not to travel Air India again.I have been travelling abroad for the 24 years and never once even considered Air India.That is the reputation they have.Thank the stars we have some good responsive airlines like Jet.I was recently in UK for a short stint and my English colleague was all praise for Jet. In Air India they treat Indians like dirt and keep their smiles for the goras. Air India will die a natural death and nobody is going to complian.It is a typical govt office type institution and they have reservation ,no wonder their service is bull shit.

Raghu, I dont think its true that AI treats Indians badly and goras better. AI crew treats passengers okay, but the flight and toilets are filthy and always delayed, thats the problem. Jet of course is superb but look at the high fares. American flights are worst.

Actually, per my opinion, everybody who is part of an organisation is bound by rules and regulations formed by the management. If the management itself is insensitive and insensible, then all the people working in the lower ladders of the heirarchies hardly have any say, but to follow whats the rule. So, in my view, dont blame the people who are working, instead blame the management or rather the "thinking brains" behind this whole machinery.
I myself live in the USA. But I hate these NRIs such as the one who wrote the above article. All they know to do is India bashing. But when these foreign countries kick these NRIs out, they come running to India and ask the Indian government to come and help them to get back to India and live again.
I have been living here in the USA for a long time and I have hardly seen any flight taking off on time. Let it be American Airlines, Delta, SouthWest etc. Almost every flight that I have taken here in the US on an average they have been delayed by at least 45 mins. In the recent 3 months or so, I have travelled a lot within the US and I have taken flights from American Airlines, Delta, Continental and SouthWest. In total I have taken about 11 flights and not a single one of them ever departed on the scheduled time. On an average all flight were delayed atleast by 1 hour.
In fact while I have been in India about 6 months back. I took 3-4 flights on Indian Airlines, Jet and Sahara. Only one Indian Airlines flight was delayed by 45 mins and the rest were on time. No airline in the world is perfect. It doesn't happen only in India. It happens everywhere.

It is not just timing of flights but alot more. Air India is only known for its Indian food and it suits the first time fliers and the oldies who want in Indian atmosphere in the plane.When you travel all over the world then you start seeing the difference.In India itself Jet and Kingfisher are way ahead.And in the international sector Singapore Airlines,Lufthansa and BA are miles ahead.I dont know about the internal flights in USA but I can talk quite confidently about travel out of India.If you get a fre ticket may be Air India but good luck on your flight!!!

I have traveled many times with Lufthansa. The air hostesses do not serve Indians passengers properly. They always talk sarcastic about Indians among themselves (well you should understand German for that (and I do)).
Food wise, AI is as good as Lufthansa if not better. Definitely AI needs to improve in many ways e.g. cleanliness in the plane, toilets, getting rid of age old air planes and using new airplanes etc. but it is not as pathetic as the author has mentioned.
