TIP is basically an abbreviation for To Insure Promptness. Having said this, it is not mandatory nor legally binding on you to pay. I have travelled across Globe and invariably people pay becuase they think they have to pay! as others are paying. If you feel comfortable paying a TIP pay, otherwise no one can demand that from you.

mr rao, no offense, but certain sections of indians anyways are famous not to tip even when you should (and i cant say i am very proud of them). so try to understand one thing clearly - its not about money (and few cents, pennies etc etc.), its simply a part of culture in some countries. so stop treating tips as ransom pls - nobody is going to "demand" it from you - especially if you tell them your complete name.

There is no culture of tips in Singapore & Malaysia but I have seen Sri Lankas & Indian working in Singapore & Malaysia do give you a wild eye if you don't tip them...its a tricky situation to handle.
Best thing to always remember while tipping is to not convert the local currency in INR and grumble how much INR are being spent for no solid reason!!!!!

lol,if some one does that, they will not even eat there.i think no one will be having that mentality when u go to a restaurant or any other place where we tip :).only thing is how much.. its from 13% to how generous you are
Good tips ! However, if you you are visiting India for any reason or even if you stay in India, fat tips are absolutely essential, especially in all (pl note 'all') government or semi-government places from a sweeper to.............any body. If you dont pay, they will not hesitate to even forcibly take money out of your pockets. It is hence better to better bargain and pay. Also, pl dont feel shy of bargaining as they will take pride in negotiating. This is for the reason of 'haraamkhori' prevalent here. These people will rob you even for the services or things you are entitled to by law e.g. passport. Many times you will find that they dont even touch haraamkhori tips below a certain amount and as they consider it their right.

We are talking of TIPS here and not the CORRUPTION... the later has different set of rules altogether.
